Would you take on a total stranger as a business partner?
I need one for a very small business but don't want to take on someone I am close to. Is this idea crazy? There is a huge gap for this product and it is HOT!
Any partnership requires trust. It is very difficult to establish it with a total stranger. There are issues with businesses and close personal relationships. Ideally you want someone who you know on some level and can start your relationship small and build from there.

depends on references and his investment

I'd have to do a TON of research on this stranger before I make a committment. Things like a complete background check for any criminal activity, a credit report, references, etc.
I'd also require that they have a business plan available and have it reviewed by an attorney and a CPA.
I don't take chances when it comes to my money, livelihood, reputation and credit being at the mercy of a stranger and/or a friend or relative who wants to go into business with me as a partner.

No, its not crazy. Usually you can get a good impression on their character after meeting them for the first time. Just ask to look at his resume and yes, check his references.

Depends. It might work if you are looking for a limited liability/ 'silent' partner, just for financing purposes.

I would rather take a stranger as a partner than a friend. hahah in fact I am looking for a stranger for a partner in my business. All my friends are offering to invest, but I tell them no...
This is what the problem is, when you have a friend, you let things slide on account of your friendship. You are not going to think twice about things that you really should. I mean you are trying to make a living not start a social club - everything has to be spelt out with your business partner and you should have have the fear of repercussions if you happen to not agree with your partner. You should not take anything for granted with your partner (nor should your partner with you) and these things just dont happen like that when your partner is a friend.
Businesses go up and go down. You dont want to potentially lose a friend cause your business might go down.
when you make friends, you tend to do so with like minded people. Sometimes in a business its not the best thing to have someone who things like you. You want someone with a different background and a different set of experiences, to see things from a different point of view. Remember, we dont always make the right decisions so having a different point of view can be a really good thing.
