You have £2,500 to use on condition it is used to start a small business any sensible ideas?
Realise it is not alot but many small businesses have started with much less some just on £25 so it can be done. This won't come round again so need to think/use it wisely. With credit Crunch many gadgets etc and frivolous items I see as being a no go area. People will always want to eat but again this may be considered a risk area. Spoke to bank but they want a full business plan and as I don't know what to do yet can't submit one and I'd rather not borrow in case it doesn't work. I do have a great idea (child safety connected) and if I could get a lead into garages/kwik fit then know it would just take off. It is both exciting and scarey as I want to make the most of this small legacy and not let their memory down in a way. It must succeed. Am willing to keep P/T eve job to help so don't have to take income for first year. Am I being naive thinking this could work ? What business would you set up with £2,500 and why ?

Have a good retail idea but research shows any lease requires 3 months in advance, some are 5yrs some are much longer and I wouldn't want to commit to say 20yrs in one place - 2 reasons. 1) may take off and need bigger premises in 2yrs 2) may need to draw line underneath and just get out but would I be liable for any outstanding lease? Is there any way to put down say just one month in advance to get started ? The stock would be on a pre-owned agency system so no real stock to purchase.

As you admit £2500 is not a large amount to start a business with.
From what you say your idea I suspect will require a substantial amount of finance to get it going and possibly some legal problems as well if it involves children.
For any new person wishing to start a business I would always suggest the following as a start.
1. Find a business where there is a guaranteed spend and where customers use the product/service every day.

2. Ideally find something you can run from home.

3. A growing market place especially if there are new products constantly evolving.

4. A business where you can tap into the efforts of others without having the hassle of employing them.

5. A business where you can build a residual based income which is the secret to wealth.

6. A business where you can be shown how to be successful, while at the same time be getting an income.

7. A business where the capital outlay is fairly minimal and where some of the rest of your cash can be used for marketing.

These are just some suggestions from someone who has started various businesses some successful some not, now I work from home and would be quite happy to show you what I do and how I started.
Feel free to email me if you would like to get more of my thoughts.

With such a small amount, I'd be keen to minimize outlay. I'd try something like a market stall or a concession in a department store. These can cost very little to set up and most of the money can then be used to purchase the merchandise that you'll sell.

Another idea would be to use the money as a down payment on a car and become a taxi driver or limousine driver. Remember that for this you need to have special licences for both the car and the driver from your local authority. You can affiliate with an existing company, which can make the job more profitable.

£2500 is small but not insignificant....I think of a business as a money-engine. I would say: try to create a few micro-money-engines.....that way you have a better change of getting the ket marketing factors right: what to sell/do? where? who to/for? At this level you can only see it as a 'hobby' but if you get a good thing going then it can be fanned up into something bigger. Try anything that might work: collect books at a jumblesale and sell online or to s/h bookshops? sell some stuff on ebay.....clean cars, offer to cut lawns...whatever......Its amazing what a shot in the arm it is to actually get money for something....Get a book on business planning by the way - you will need to work through it to understand the key concepts. Do email if you want a recommended title.

Gelato shop. But I find that you'll be more successful if you first find the market then decide what to do. For instance, my neighborhood has a huge park and no ice cream shops. That's why I thought of a gelato shop.

Even in a recession people will spend on food and pets. Invest in a mobile burger van, or a mobile dog washing van. We're crying out for the latter around here. Good luck whatever you decide.

As an alternative, have you thought about investing in yourself, do a book keeping course or the AAT qualification.

After you have the knowledge not only are you more employable but you also have relevant skills which you could use to become self employed

check out the AATs website http://www.aat.org.uk
