Martin.B | Young entrepenuer? |
I'm 17, currently stuck in an administration job for a bailiff company, I recently viewed some sites about young boys starting up their own business and this really appealed to me, I spoke to my parents and they thought (like everyone else did) that its a stupid idea and I should just look for normal work. But someone has to start somewhere don't they? Does anyone have any idea at how I could go about starting a business and who I could speak to or, or what sites to look at. Cheers. Additional Details I was thinking a video rental service maybe? Via Internet? |

i love these... i have no frigging idea what i want to do, but i fancy starting my own business... posts.
you start with the idea, then create the business NOT the other way round.
what are you good at, what do you know backwards, do other people want it. if you can answer these questions you have somewhere to start, otherwise stick to daydreaming in the office. |

hey buddy, i'm 17 too and i was in the same position as you a year ago. My friend and I started a tennis private instruction business in Montgomery County Maryland. Our website is below. So it's very possible to start a business of your own. Just play to one of your strengths and be aware of what people need in your area. In my area tennis was a good idea because the clubs' rates were way too much for a lot of people. Also, going into business with someone is a great idea so you two can bounce ideas off of each other and make sure the business doesn't stray too far down the wrong path.
Bon chance! |

I think that if you've got a good idea for a business, you should research it as much as possible to check that it is viable, then go for it! In some ways it's great to start whilst you are still young, as you have the energy and enthusiasm to put into the business. You need to work out what service or products you want to offer, before you can do anything else. Assess your own strengths and weaknesses, work out if there is something that you are particularly good at that you could bring to a business. Above all you need to be incredibly self-motivated, hard working and determined to succeed. Starting up and running your own business will take a huge amount of work, you have to be willing to devote all of your life and energy to get it off the ground. It's a good idea to start small, working on your business in your spare time whilst holding down a normal job, then giving up your job to give more time to the business as it grows. |

hi, starting a business can be tough, especially if you don't have family support - but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't!
if you are determined then put some plans down on paper, do some research and prove to people that you are serious about it and will be committed.
it would be wise to stick to something you know a little about - or are at least interested in otherwise you may lose motivation.

...Start small and have another income source to keep you going....do a business plan...work out how long you can keep doing it without earning much and then review after that time to see if the idea really is worthwhile....don't listen to the 'nay sayers' if they just say "stupid idea' but listen to anyone who gives a real reason why it might not work....talk to people who have done it themselves....business link (in the UK) are helpful...but often these organisations aren't run (or don't seem to be) by people who have actually set up and run a small enterprise themselves....they don't tell you that for every £3 you earn you will only take home £1 (at least till it starts to fly) and for ever hour of 'work' (paid work) that you do you will have to do an hour of sales and an hour of admin (at least for a service business)....Forget it if you want an easy life, 9-5 etc. But its great to run a business! |

My only advice (from a guy who has started, run, and sold 5 businesses), make sure you consult with a lawyer at some point in the process. |
