The more I for an office job , the more I get amazed. Employers ask unusual requirements for this kind of position; well, I understand each job has its own needs; but to demand having a reliable car is the last straw !.
Where I come from, an underdeveloped country, not only I've never been asked to have a car to apply for any position, but also companies offer one of their own car fleet to the applicants !

It is just a request and pretty common in a first world country. They usually want you to deliver something with this vehicle.
I worked for a very large business machine company for 30 years, they did not supply me a vehicle, and got upset when mine crapped out. They paid me well and that was part of the understood agreement. My option was to tell Ibm I didn't want to work for them. |

They want to know that they can depend on you to get to work on time every day. If your car is unreliable, then they are going to think you may have trouble getting to work on time. If you don't have a reliable car, let them know you have another reliable way to get to work (i.e. bus, walk, bike, friend driving you, etc.) |

It's actually an illegal one.
The legal question is:
Do you have reliable transportation to and from work?
....or...
"This job requires an extensive amount of travel and the company reimburses miliage but does not provide a vehicle....would this be a problem for you?" |

Many positions in the USA have been compiled into single positions...like doing away with a secretary and putting those responsibilities on office staff....for example making runs to the office store, court house, other offices, post office, banks, etc. So to try to be successful in this line of work, without a car is kind of crazy if you ask me...you can't possibly think a bus or a bike will provide what you need. And since office personnel's primary responsibility wouldn't be to travel anywhere, they wouldn't be offered a company car, but instead given a mileage allowance, or the option of getting reimbursed for travel expenses.
If you want an office job that just involves sitting in one spot and not doing anything other than your office work, then I suggest data entry for a magazine or newspaper. That's about all I can think of that wouldn't require some type of transportation. |

That is not an unusual request depending on the job, for some positions, you will be driving your own car to do the job, therefore, you must have reliable transportation and they need to be assured of that. |

In America the requirement is for a "reliable means of transportation to work". Be it car, bus, train, whatever, just get your butt into work on time and I think THAT is what they're aiming for. They want to ensure punctuality it sounds like. |
