cnorwich | 20 years old and never filed taxes? |
Hi,
i'm 20 years old and due to lost t4's, i've never filed my taxes. I just recently managed to get all my previous t4's and i'm not ready to file. I have 5 years of slips, 4 of those years I only worked part time as a student and this last year is the first where I was working full time. Problem is, i'm not sure where I can go to get this done. H&R Block told me that i'd be paying to get each year done, and I can't really afford to pay that much money right now. I've looked at a handful of online filing sites, but from what I found, they only allowed me to file for the previous year.
Would anyone happen to know a more affordable way for me to file the 4 or 5 years of taxes I have without it costing an arm and a leg? Thank you. Additional Details please be aware when answering that I am aware i need to file, i just need to know an affordable place where I can do them without having to pay an insane amount. I want to do them myself, but the online places i've found only let me do them back one year, i need to file 5 years of them.
Secondly, i'm canadian, so the IRS government site doesn't apply to me. |

Paying someone to do your taxes is a waste. It sounds like you are a typical 20 year old which means it would take a total of 5-10 minutes to do each year.
Start by going to http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/formspubs/t1general/allyears-e.html
Print out the forms for the years you are missing. For 2007 just pick one up at any post office.
The process is fairly easy. Don't be intimidated by all the lines. 99% of them you'll be leaving empty. Just start at line 100 and go slow.
What you might also do is use QuickTax or some other computerized tax program for 2007. Most of them offer you a free option if you made less than ~$20-25k. Don't choose to netfile but instead print out the 2007 return. This will help you with the previous years since you'll be able to see what lines had numbers entered and what went where. Use that as a guide since your taxes are pretty basic and should be nearly the same each year. |

Trust me "GO FILE YOUR TAXES" all of them. First off you might be getting some money back since you were a student for a few years. Write off your school expenses every year. Trust me, when they come for you, there coming and if they come they want money. So its better to file and possibly receive money then sit and wait for them to send you a letter auditing you. |

If it were me (and I'm no CPA), I'd just start filing from 2007 on and see if the IRS ever figures it out. You might slip through the cracks and if not the end result is the same because you already owe the penalties for all the back taxes.
It's a risky move, but one that I would consider. BTW, if you do file all the previous years, do it yourself since I'm guessing they are all very simple taxes to do (1040 ez's). Go to Irs.gov and browse around for help. They'll have the answer on there for you. H&R Block and all those places are a ripoff. |

This is what I would do....
I would contact the tax dept by phone (blue pages, Canada)
and tell them the story and ask how to handle it.
In most cases, part time might get you refunds, not causing you to actually pay tax.
Or if you have money, talk to a TAX lawyer so they can deal with the tax dept. (not worthwhile for small amounts of money) |

Get a copy of the forms for each year and do them yourself. You aren't likely to have difficult taxes. Just make sure you follow the forms carefully and read the instructions. And double check your math. |

You better thinking about filed, cause of 2 main reason; IRS will hunt your down if you don't paid, and plus tax rebate just around the corner, if you don't file tax; no change you getting any check from uncle sam. |

you have to file taxes failing to file can lead into penalties and compounded interest also failing to file is a maxium jail sentence up to 5 years with no chance of parole.
It is federal you also can be audited and that would mean the IRS comes to your house or place of employment or you will have to go to them if they see you never filled out a form for a exstention or cause of hardship why you did not file that will be a automatic investagation and you will be appearing in court. If found guilty you will be going to a federal prison not your local prison in your city or state this is a federal issue and they take it serious. The maxium penalty you can receive is under the federal level.
That will give you something to think about when you are filing taxes that fear goes threw us all the possible jail time if you fail to do your taxes .
But we are humans but to the irs that is not good enough you have to be one step better and be responciable!
If i were you i would call them and tell them that you have all your w2 and w4's handy alot of the time if you never filed and it is your first time it will be a slap on the wrist but if you constantly and repeadly do this that is against the law and you will be paying the price with fines and also garnishment of wadges and froozen access to your savings and checking account .
This is a serious matter to think about before exsplaining it on the internet for others to see.
They also have a internet division that tracks isp down when you file and when you not file the fbi and the irs are interlinked with each other data base wise the internet can harm you in that way opening your mouth and bragging about it can also harm your chances of never being caught this is the irs and the irs is the one that says what goes and doesn't .
I do hope you have all your paper work in order because you are going to need it and if you are not able to get all your taxes together there is free services that can help you like tax help centers in many places like walmart , places of warship local offices like your local warefare office and the social sucerity adminastration as well as the irs offices located in your biggest cities in your area .
They will help you around tax time as well as even helping you to file you can also file for free at irs.gov click under free filing and it will help you file for free.
If you are in trouble do not repersent your self in this matter advise your self and get a attorney the goverment is more powerful then you think the irs can ruin your world completely and i do hope the best for you for this tax season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
