cherryapplemilk | 22% tax for a 16 year old in a part time job? |
I am 16 years old and have just started my first job. It is part time but I am on tax code BR and I am paying around 22% tax. How do I change my tax code so I don't pay tax? How do I get the money I have already lost from being taxed back? Thank you! |

the other answerers are incorrect. Code BR is not emergency tax, but basic rate tax. You need to ask your employer for a form P46 which you sign to say this is your first job. Your employer will then put you on code 522L which is a basic personal allowance. Your tax refund will come in your next pay packet.
You dont wait until the end of the year to sort this out - take action now as its not good to have the government owing you money!
Any probs with your employer, ring the HMRC helpline. |

The first answer is partially wrong. You do need a form from your employer but you don't have to wait until 2008. it will be refunded as soon as they process it. |

You are on an emergency tax code. Once you get the form sorted it'll get sorted out. If you don't automatically get a refund request a tax return at the end of the year (April 2008).
As for paying no tax it doesn't matter how old you are, if you earn above the tax free limit (roughly £5000 per year) you pay tax on the amount over the tax free limit..
eg if you earn £7500 a year you pay tax on £2500 |

It's possible that you may be paying "emergency tax" if you have only just started. Basically they charge you the most that they can until they get it sorted out. Probably a month or so, then they should give you a new code and automatically return the overpayment to you.
At least that's how it used to work - I'm probably a bit out of date on this though. |

BR is an emergency tax code.
Ask your employer for the number of the tax office they use. Call them and tell them you're paying emergency tax and ask them to change your tax code.
When it's sorted, the tax will be refunded to your through your wage packet. |

Listen to fengirl mate !!! As another ex-taxman, I can confirm that she is spot on.
I would like to add however, that you may still need to pay some income tax. If your annual income is above £5225, then you probably will have to pay something. Age is no barrier to paying Income Tax - income is !! |

You have to get your current employer to give you a tax form. Any money you have been taxed you can only really get back at the end of the financial year (april 2008) when you get your p60. |
