$600 Govt Check. Am I getting one?
I am a student and claimed as a dependent by my parents. But I do pay income taxes... am I getting one of those $600 stimulus checks?

If your parents claim you as a dependent, you will be ineligible for the rebate, but you may still benefit under the plan.

While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009.

No since your parents claim you as a dependent. Tough break.

Nope. Students filing as dependent are the group that paid income tax but don't qualify for a rebate.

If you're 17 or under, your parents will get $300 for you, but if you're over 17, they won't get anything either.

I just looked this up, I'm pretty annoyed with the whole thing because I worked full time last year and pay my own tuition, but have to file as dependent because of the fafsa. So I made well over $3,000 and am paying income tax on that, but I still get to be part of the minority that doesn't get a rebate.

just me: Yes, I do. In the eyes of the fafsa, anyone under 22, not married, and without dependents of their own is a dependent of their parents. Short of going out and getting myself pregnant, I can't say I'm independent and still file the fafsa. It's got nothing to do with whether you support yourself or not.

Maybe if you're really sweet to them between now and then, they will split it with you. Man,, that would take some major sucking up LOL (Sorry, spoken as a parent remembering when I had 4 teenagers and 2 in college at the same time)

No. Dependents won't be getting checks.

Valerie Y
unfortunately, not only are you not getting one, but your parents won't get credit for you in their check either. you can only receive the check if you are not a dependent, and earned at least $3000 of income in certain categories such as wages, self-employment, and others.

Do you pay taxes or are taxes withheld from your check and you receive them back at the end of the year?

If you have a net tax liablity you are probably providing over half of you own support and your parents should not be claiming you.

Sarah - you do not have to file as a dependent for FAFSA. If you don't claim yourself just so you get better benefits from the government it is your fault you are not getting the rebate and should only be annoyed with yourself. If you worked full time last year and paid your own tuition you are more than likely paying more than half of your own support and should not be a dependent.

Sarah: You are correct in that FAFSA uses your parents income to determine if you are eligible. That does not mean they have to claim you on their taxes as a dependent it simply means FAFSA considers you a dependent and will use your parents income. You can claim yourself on your tax return if you do not meet the IRSs definition of a qualifying child who can be claimed as a depedent. FAFSA definition of dependent and IRS definition of dependent is different.

Check it out and maybe you can amend your tax return to claim yourself and receive the 600 check.

No dependents won't get the stimulus rebate check.

For more information on the eligibility and how much rebate you will get read:

The AntiChrist
If you're claimed by someone else as a dependent, you can't file your own return.
