In response to the guy who said I was above poverty level... I am still broke as a joke... all I do is work. I barely survived as it was I don't see how someone could live on less then what I made. My rent alone was 1/2 of what I made all year. |

It is not a "tax refund". It is a "tax rebate".
The House has passed a tax rebate bill currently being considered by the Senate.
Under the terms of the House bill, you would be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $600 if you paid that much in Federal Income Tax. If you only paid $350 in taxes (less than the $600 rebate limit), you only get back $350. Since you had earned income of at least $3000, you would get at least the minimum rebate of $300.
While the rebate depends on your 2007 income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the proposed plan, in 2008, taxes would be cut from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.
It's like a one time tax cut for 2008, but you get the rebate now instead of waiting to file your 2008 taxes. Because this is an advance payment on your 2008 taxes, your refund next year could be more (or less!) depending on your 2008 income.
Nothing has passed Congress yet, so all details are subject to change.

If you earned more than $3,000 in 2007, paid taxes, and filed an income tax return, you get a rebate. To get the full $300 rebate for a single person, your annual tax bill has to cover the amount of the rebate. If it doesn't, you'll get a partial sum, up to the amount of the tax owed. In other words, you have to have paid $300 in taxes to get the full $300 back. The tax bill has not yet passed the Senate but this aspect is not one an item still being debated.
A very recent and agreed upon add-on by the Senate and House is to extend the rebate in the amount of $300 to families or individuals earning at least $3,000 but who paid no taxes. It looks pretty definite that Seniors on Social Security will also get it. |
