A dependent child worked part time, earned $2600.00, a full time student. Does he need to file a tax return?
The student is my son. He is qualified as my dependent. He paid about $62 as federal income tax, no state income tax in my state. He paid $155 SS tax.

Yes.

Make sure he checks the box that says he's being claimed as a dependent by another tax payer.

He is not required to file a tax return. However, he should file a tax return in order to get a refund of the $62 he paid in federal taxes.

He could file a Form 1040-EZ.

Yes, he needs to file to get any refund that might be due. Since you claimed him on your return, he can't take the personal exemption deduction on his return.

He doesn't need to file, but he should file and get his $62

abigyellobus
he should file but cannot claim himself as he is YOUR dependent.

Jo Blo
TMA is correct
He is not required by law to file a return, but he can file and get the $62.00 federal tax that he paid in as a refund.

He will not claim himself as a dependent.

Form 1040EZ would be quick easy form to fill out.

All incomes need to be filed. However, not all incomes filed are taxable. There is a ceiling. Check with your local tax department.

myninny54
i believe so...anything over 600.00 dollars needs to be filed.
