Identity theft is on the rise these days. They are assuming your identity for a profit. I understand you don't wish to get them in trouble but when they assumed your identity they certainly didn't seem to be worried about getting YOU into trouble which is what may very well happen if it's discovered down the road. This is a serious crime. You gave this relative an opportunity to previously regret their mistakes and they chose to repeat the mistake so it's really off your back now. I can't tell you what to do, but since this type of crime can haunt you down the road and your credit can also be ruined for ten years, I know I wouldn't be very happy with just sitting back and doing nothing. Good luck solving this one.

Indiana
you have to contact the IRS, i would also check your credit report because chances are they are doing more than just your taxes.
you need to act fast

Report it to the IRS & file your taxes on time anyhow.
They will get into trouble, when it is investigated.

Here is the IRS link to report fraud.

Noone i
That is called fraud and punishable by a court of law. I would turn them into the County Attorney, State Atty General or just go to the local police and ask them to take a report on it.

Call the IRS and report it.

Grandpa
call the irs and report it for fraud and then file a report with the police for theft

where is everybody?

wow. did they claim you as a dependent? did you work and are you going to file too? you don't want to go to jail for this person. i would call a tax person and ask them the best way to take care of this or contact the IRS. if this person keeps doing this it will ruin you too. you gave fair warning. take care of this asap. good luck

irs.gov will give you the numbers to call. That person probably turned in self employment earnings in your name.

Unfortunately, you have already broken the law because you did not report the first fraud, which makes you an accomplice. I would not contact the IRS. I would tell the family member that he/she needed to go to a tax filing company, like H&R Block, and file an ammended return for both years. On the ammended returns have your name removed. Your family member will need to send an accompanying cheque for the entire amount which he/she was overpaid. Good Luck !
Even if the money has to be borrowed, you need to clear the matter up immediately. It is a serious crime.
