A question on council tax needs an answer please help?
just been told that my single parent discount is going to stop because i have an 18 year old full time student who still lives at home with me and his 2 younger brothers aged 13 and 5. i thought i'd still get the discount with having the other 2 kids as well. my 18 year old cant afford to contribute to any house hold bills as he only works 1-2 days a week for £4.35 an hour which isnt a lot at the end of the week he only works when needed. i'm on a low income and live in rented accommadation which isnt cheap. what i want to know is am i entitled to any other type of benefit just to make ends meet.
£4.35 thats well below mim wage, he should find a nother job.
go to the local council and get the benifits form filled out and they will help you

i didnt think you had to pay for students if FT education. i think you should check this with the Council.
?
You WILL get help and a reduction if you are on a low income.
But it will probably vary from council to council as to the exact details.
Your 18 year old may have to get a more substantial job if all else fails.

Hi, I've been going through similar things recently with a son aged 19 who has just dropped out of a college course and doesn't know what to do next. It seems really tough at the moment for everyone regarding Council Tax benefit etc. because the councils seem to have been doing a massive swoop on everyone they can get their hands on recently, and we are after all only caring parents trying to support our children through their education. However if your son is currently a full-time student you should still receive the full council tax exemption for him and any part-time earnings he has should not be taken into account. I contacted my local councillor about my problems and although she did not have all the facts to hand she put me in touch instantly with someone higher up in the department which helped, but it still isn't sorted, groan, groan, I have to see them tomorrow........Please bear in mind though that the counter staff may not always have all the information and you have the right to appeal against any decision regarding your benefits. I presume you're getting all the child tax credits etc. Another thing I recently found out about is that the age of a child in non advanced education who you can still claim benefits for has now been extended to the age of 20.
Best wishes.

you should still get the disscount if not ya 18 year old may be able to claim the disscounted tax for being a student for you and also he may be able to get job seekers allowance or the £30 from the government for going college he should ask his college

Once your son turns 18 then their are two liable adults in your house for Council Tax purposes, however if your son is still in education that qualifies under Council Tax legislation for a disregard then he will be disregarded from the bill and you will receive a 25% discount.
If the Council have told you that your 25% Single Person Discount has ended because your son is 18 then they are technically correct. It will need to be replaced by a 25% Student disregard.
Contact your council with the proof that your son is a F/T student as soon as possible.
