How much did she pay in taxes during the year. How old is the second child? Is there daycare costs involved? What other deductions do you have? Not enough info for an answer.

With no info on what was withheld, no real way to tell. Also, would have to know the exact ages of the kids. If at least one of them was under age 17 as of the end of the year, the child tax credit should wipe out any tax liability she has - otherwise her tax would be close to $600. She'd get a little over $3300 for EIC. Her "refund" would be that, plus whatever was withheld for federal income tax if any, minus her tax liability if any.

Her tax will be zero because of the Child Tax Credit. She will receive the following refunds:

1. All of her federal withholding
2. Additional Child Tax Credit of $650
3. Earned Income Credit of $3,500

The above assumes she files as Head of Household, claims both children, one child is age 16 or younger, and she has only wages for income.

She should be paying little tax so the refund, if any, would be small.

Our tax structure isn't that simple. As she is only making $22,000 per year and, having three dependents (including herself), she would have little if any witholding tax withheld to begin with.

As for her refund, it would depend greatly on what child care expenses she had, the ages of the children, etc.

Not enough information. The child tax credit is only if the child is under 17 (not 18) at the end of the year.

Not enough info - it all depends on how much is taken out of her paycheck. If not enough has been taken out, she could actually owe taxes.

A person's income tax refund is the amount of tax they have had withheld minus the amount of tax they need to pay. If they've had a lot of tax withheld over the course of the year and have a very low tax obligation, they'll get a large refund. If they have had a minimal amount withheld and have an average size tax obligation, they might have to pay.

The person in your example probably won't have a large tax obligation, but since you don't tell us how much she's had withheld over the year, we have no way of predicting what her refund will be.

(She won't get the tax credit for the older child.)
