Sir Hammed | About to start work as a tax preparer.? |
Hi, I'm about to start a job as a tax preparer for a small firm. It's been awhile since I've done individual returns. I don't exactly remember what software he uses.
Anyway, do you have any recommended study/reading material I should go through before starting work? |

Congratulations.
This is going to be a challenging 2008 tax season.
How current are you with the current tax law changes as you did not provide any information about your background???
Best things to do are:
1. Pull up the various tax forms to familiarize yourself with them
2. Learn the software that your firm has and KNOW how to use it
3. Take a Tax seminar that highlights the 2008 tax law changes.
The seminars are available through local state and professional tax groups so contact them to see which is available in your area! |

I have spent the last month and a half reading over 2,000 pages of material, changes, instructions, etc; taken eight exams and yada. Nothing too drastic for 2008; the tax programs I received and loaded have already been updated twice and just got notice that due to certain changes by the IRS they will be completely replaced next week; in chaos there is order. Have a wonderful tax season. |

The tax laws have changed a lot in the past 5 years.
If you predate the "qualifying child" rule changes in 2005, you will have a ton of homework. (This was, imho, a major change. HOH now requires a dependent in all cases.)
Start by reading IRS publication 17. Start on page 1 and read the entire 300 pages. |

I would look over the instructions for the 1040 as well as Publication 17 which describes many different parts of the individual tax return. You can find them on irs.gov. |

This is frightening! In my state, California, Oregon and Maryland, you have to get a minimal amount of training before you can be turned loose on unsuspecting taxpayers. At least take the basic class offered by H&R Block or one of its competitors before taking money from people. |

yeah pub 17 is a great start.
and believe it or not, but this YA! has given me a wealth of information that of course I always cross check with www.irs.gov |
