Doh! | After not filing tax returns for 3 years, where do I start? |
So I know that not filing taxes is bad I'm not looking to be chastised. I just need help on what's the best solution for someone in my situation. I didn't file the last 2 years because of extenuating life circumstances and now I'm trying to make right. Where should I start? I work as an independent contractor so I've never had taxes taken out the last few years. Help! I want to do this right. |

Why not call a tax attorney (some offer a free first consultation). Find out from him/her what you need to do and how to handle it.
If you owe a lot, many times, a tax attorney can work out a deal with the IRS where you only pay a fraction of what you owe. As I see it, contacting an attorney, even if you have to pay, is probably the best way to go. |

You start by having the last years taxes figure. Then after you figure them, mail them in. Then call the IRS and start with a payment plan to pay the taxes and interest and penalty. Make sure you make estimated taxes for this 2006 taxes. |

First off, be ready with all the supporting receipts and docs. Probably will have to pay quite a bit in taxes so if you don't have it, make sure you're up front with the tax people and lay out a payment plan and stick to it. For personal taxes, as long as you don't really owe anything, not a big deal. |

Go to the IRS web site and start by downloading the old forms. Just start filling them out and mail them when you're done. If you did owe income tax, then you'll probably face penalties, but I'm not really familiar with how much they are. |

I suppose calling the IRS may be the right way...then again, you're probably better off gathering as much info as possible of all things related(deduction info, receipts, check stubs,etc.)...then find a good CPA.Your cpa will be able to get you in order. |

File right away.
1) Get a copy of all W4s, 1099s, and other related documents. If you cannot find them ask your employer(s)
for a copy.
2) Get a copy of TurboTax from Turbo Tax online or see
if you know anyone who has a copy. Heck, maybe your local
library might even have one.
Note:
There is a high probability that the IRS owes you money
If your employer has been taking out taxes from your paycheck, there's a good chance Uncle Sam has several checks
for you.
Do it know, you'll be glad when the check(s) is in the mail. |
