Am I a dependent or not?
My monthly income is around $900 and my dad's is $1050. We are 4 members in our family, my mom and my brother. I have to pay half of the rent expenses, which is $500, every month. Rest $500 is paid by my dad. I also have to pay for some other expenses for my family around $200. Am I a dependent? I am 22, single. After all these expenses I pay, will I still get return after tax filing?

The rules for dependency are rather complicated, but one overriding fact is you can never be claimed by anyone as a dependent if you provide for over 1/2 of your own support. You certainly seem to provide well over 1/2 of your own support.

HOWEVER, you really need to consider being able to claim your brother. It is possible to claim your brother EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T PAY A DIME FOR HIS SUPPORT. This is part of congresses new Uniform Definition of a Child. As long as you live with your brother for at least 6 months and he is under 19 (or under 24 and a full-time student) and he doesn't pay for 1/2 of his own support, you can claim him. Of course, your parents can claim him too. What you should do is decide who is better off claiming him. The IRS allows you to do this. You may think that it is obvious for your parents to claim him, but there are credits that may make it better for you do it.

What you need to do is do your tax return (Single) with and without your brother and have your parents do their return with and without your brother and choose the combination that works best.

But don't take my word for it. Check out Publication 17 from the IRS. Page 24 discusses "Qualifying Children"

FYI, there is no way we can tell what your refund will be without knowing other things such as how much federal tax withholding you had, whether you claimed anyone else, whether you had any unearned income, etc.

FYI 2 - you CAN be claimed as a dependent at ANY age (regardless what other people said). They need to look-up "Qualifying Relatives" in the same Publication 17.

wendyd1999
You are not a dependent unless you are a full time student for at least 1/2 the year, due to your income level.

As for a tax refund, that would depend on how much taxes were withheld.

The only way you would be a dependant at your age is if you are a full time college student. Your dad to claim you as a dependant must prove you are enrolled in college full time.

There is no way you should be a dependant, you need to claim 1 exceptions on your taxes yourself as a dependant.

LL
If your are a full time student then they can still claim you, but it's your choice. My parents claimed me when I was your age and that was only because I wanted to help them out. Just make sure that enough is withheld from your paycheck so that you can get some back when you file.

nope. simple as that.

After 19 you are not a dependent unless you are a FULL TIME college student.

If you dad did claim you in the past you can refile you taxes correctly but will cause a headache for your dad.

shame on everyone for saying she could be claimed as a dependent at her age if she were a full-time student especially the multi-year tax preparers. you should know by now that anyone who provides over half of their own support can not be anyones dependent. she clearly provided over half of her support. In fact, she probably provided 100%. now, go back and amend every tax return you did since 1976.

i think that you are indipendant after all you are helping your mum and dad out with things. not many poeple your age would be doing that, well not half i know that i wouldnt!! you dont need poeple to help ypu and it looks as though you are doing good for yourself

Because of your age, you cannot be claimed as anybody's dependent. You may file as single, I don't know if you will get a refund.

parrothead2371
No, due to your age. You have to ask a CPA about whether you can use those things for deduction but I dont think you can.

I think you should ask an accountant.

My experience would say that you are a dependant, but you should find out if your parents claim you on their tax returns.

You may want to look into emancipating yourself from your perents.

your dependant status has nothing to do with how much of your familes expenses you have to pay.

good luck
