Am I considered "Head of Household" for my W-4?
I am filling out my W-4 and wondering if I am considered Head of Household. I am a full-time student, and I work full-time as well. I have my own apartment (renting) and I pay all the utilities and support myself. Does Head of Household mean you have to own a house?? Thanks!

Christi S
No, head of household means you have a dependent, or dependents.

You would be considered single, but you can use your school fees and other expenses if you file a long form.

There isn't a head of household box on the w-4. As far as your info goes, it doesn't look like you qualify on your 1040, either, since you don't have a dependent. To be a "head of household," you need to maintain your own household for yourself and for a qualified child.

No you are not a head of household as you don't technically have a household. You would need dependents to qualify as head of household.

You can only claim single or married on a W4 form. You claim Head of Household on your income tax returns when you maintain a residence and have a qualifying child or relative live with you. You have to pay at least 50% support of the qualifying child or relative as well. After reading your question you are "Single" not Head of Household.

No, you don't have to own a house but you do have to be maintaining a household for yourself and someone else.

If you are just supporting yourself, you are "Single".

For tax purposes... You are single. Head of household would require dependents that you are taking care of.

Head of household means that you have at least one closely related dependent, and provide over half of the expenses of keeping up a home for them. It has nothing to do with whether that home is owned or rented.

No, unless you have a child or two you didn't mention, you are NOT head of household.

No, you do not claim HOH on your W-4 or your 1040. To be eligible to claim HOH, then you need to have a dependent and be unmarried.

No, but it does mean head of a household that has more than one person. You do not qualify.

Yes you are head of your household! The government wants to determine if you receive monies as a dependent from say others like parents, guardian estate etc. The clincher is you pay for your own rent and have rent receipts, utilities bills and withholding tax is taken from your paycheck.

sun_shinevt
You are the head of your household, you don't have to own a house. It is just saying you are the one who brings home the money and pays the bills and are financially responsible for your family.
