In New York State is my employer legally obligated to give me payed sick days?

No. That is a benefit solely at the discretion of the employer. If your employer doesn't offer it, find a new job with one that does.

About the only thing that your employer owes you is a paycheck and a safe work environment.

No, your employer isn't required to give you ANYTHING. If they choose to give you paid vacation and/or paid sick days they do so because they choose to and they think it will help them attract/keep employees.

Not if it's a private organization.

I have no idea about New York but in my state there are tons of jobs that do not have payed sick leave. I think that this is more of a benefit than a requirement. Now, there are certain situations where work has to grant you leave but they are not required to give you paid days.

Kristina
It depends on the rules set forth by the union, corporation or organization. If the employer doesn't tell you upfront then probably not.

Nope. And you aren't legally entitled to paid vacation or paid holidays either. If the employer gives them to you, great, but they don't have to. They are required to pay you for the hours you actually work, and for most jobs they're required to pay you time and a half for hours over 40 in a week, but that's all you are legally entitled to.
