Amend taxes?
I have the 1040x filled out to amend my taxes (forgot to add bank interest). I was originally getting a refund of $461 and now the amended return shows I should have only got $456. Do I have to send the original form 1040ez in with the 1040x or what? Do I submit the $5 payment in with it? Am I going to be charged a penalty because the IRS originally overpaid?
I am so confused.
Thanks
Additional Details
I rather do it and not get audited!

Keep this simple.
WAIT for your refund of $461.
Then mail in the 1040X with a check for $5.
If the $5 is back in the IRS hands by 4/15/2008, you won't owe penalties or interest.

Yes, the 1040X is confusing. Why do you think everyone says don't file the original tax return so soon....

You will fill out the entire front of the form.
If you are dependent, let me know the AGI from wages and I'll give you a hint about how lines 2 and 4 should look.

Do not attach a copy of the original return to the Form 1040-X. Only attach copies of any NEW forms, if any; in this case there should not be any new forms. Include a check for the additional tax due if it's $1 or more.

As long as you file the 1040-X and pay the tax due by April 15th there will be no penalties.

Did the IRS send you a notice that you had unreported interest and that you owe them $5? Or did you catch this on your own and then want to file an amended return. If you've already done your amended, what the heck, send in the $5 bucks. Just send in a copy of the original return and write in BIG letters (red ink if you have it) AS ORIGINALLY FILED. Then send that in with your 1040X and the $5. I'm surprised if the irs notified you that there was an error of $5 though. Or you can wait and see if the IRS ever bothers with it.

yes
send in a copy of the original return with the amended along with a check for the difference.
i do not believe they will charge you interest on that but if they do all you do is send the check when they let you know how much. i recomend sending the amended as soon as you can to avoid interest.
you can not do enything about it but if they catch it then yeah there will probably be interest.

i do taxes.

I believe the instructions for the x form say you have to attach a copy of the original filing to it. If you owe money, then give them a check for $20 and if you paid d too much, they will send you a refund for the overpayment.

I don't know if it's worth doing for $5...

Chances are you won't get audited over this amount. Probably the IRS will send you a letter stating that the original figures were wrong and correcting them and asking if you agree and for you to send in the money.

With the 1040X, you send a copy of the original return filed, and you use that return to complete the 3 columns in 1040X. Send the $$ owed with the 1040X. Is this for 2006 or 2007? If 2007, there's no penalty or interest as long as payments reach them by tax time.

Why not let the return stand as originally presented. When the error is discovered( if it ever is) you will be informed and then pay what you are told. Chances are there will be no audit. and you will be home free. There are more lucrative returns to audit where the resulting recovery will be many times the $ 5 .
