Anyone know a free service to do taxes online?
I went to Irs.gov and checked out the free file sites there. I've tried two sites listed there unsuccessfully.

Both times I went through the whole process, got to the end and they threw in some BS excuse saying I'm no longer eligible. For instance on one site I went through the process, thought I was finished and when it came time to file it said I was ineligible because my income was too low. The other time I tried filing, I got to the end and it said I was in the wrong state to be eligible for their service.

Anyone know a reliable, no strings site to file a federal return? If you know of one that includes filing a state return for free that would be a nice bonus.

Thanks

If your adjusted gross income was $54,000 or less in 2007, you can use Free File to prepare and e-file your taxes free online.

I prepare returns for Liberty Tax Service and they provide free file service at www.irs.gov. Also, if you find this company in your area, walk in and ask for a CD to take home and file your return for free on your own PC. I also prepare returns for AARP as a Tax Aide Volunteer. Call 1-800-829-1040 and ask for a site in your area where you can have your return filed electronically and your refund can be direct deposit. The only problem is, volunteer services do not prepare state returns, only federal returns.

Ineligible because your income was too low? That doesn't make any sense. Most sites offer free filing *only* to people with low incomes!

Could they maybe have meant that you don't have to file any tax returns this year, because you don't have enough income to claim?

What sites have you been trying? I don't understand that whole "wrong state" thing, or why they wouldn't have caught that right at the beginning. Are you trying reliable sites, like Turbotax or Taxact?

If you want to file taxes online free, you want to try FreeTaxUSA. All you need to do is meet 2 simple requirements:

1. Have an AGI of $54,000 or less.
2. Live in AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, UT, VA, or WV

They will process your federal tax return free of charge. You might also want to use their state tax filing service. They charge $9.95 for that. Check out the website below.

TurboTax, it's free if you make under a certain amount.

Also, if your state is listed, they will file your state for free.

100% free..... www.taxfreedom.com

it's turbotax's free file website, HOWEVER there are certain requirements for free file. you must make under $30,000 OR qualify for the earned income credit OR be active military to take advantage of it.
