Apparently my 2008 tax rebate is being taken from me in my 2009 tax return?
ok so i filed my taxes with my accountant. she told me i was getting back $3614, however i only got back $2796. ($818 less than what she said) when i spoke to her she said that because i got $600 from that whole stimulus check situation back in earlier 2008, that im not getting back 3614, although the tax program she used calculated it into the total anyway. i guess whats she saying is that when she filed my taxs, that it automatically assumed i was getting one of those stimulus check things this year if i hadnt already gotten one. but then when the paperwork went through, it was then noted that i got a stimulus check, so $600 was deducted from my return....does this make sense or is this lady really trying to screw me over???

The online software is written poorly this year. It automatically adds in the rebate then subtracts out what you received. This rebate is above your normal return so if you received it in 2008 then you are not entitled to it in the 2008(not 2009) return. The refund you are actually getting would have been your refund had the rebate not existed.

No, not trying to screw you over, but she screwed up if she calculated your stimulus into your refund again and didn't check to see if you got it already. Many software programs do calculate it in at first, but then you have to back out the amount you already got since otherwise you'd be getting it twice, and are only entitiled to get it once. The program doesn't know what you got last year - the preparer is supposed to check, and take it back out if it isn't supposed to be there.

Usually in every program it will ask you the question:
Did you get a stimulus rebate last year if you say yes, next question
how much, the tax pro will imput the amount and if you didnt get the
whole thing last year they will give you the rest this year if you made
less money. Now if you told her no, then the program automotically
gives you the rebate this year, but as a good tax pro I always go to
irs.gov and imput the clients ss# and it gives me the amount of
money received by them, so maybe thats what the tax pro did and
realized you did get it, although the irs will eventually catch this and
adjust the amount when they receive the return but it does make
returns and payments be delayed. But there is no way she can screw
you out of your money, all checks go to the persons address and in
their name. There are also other situations in which you cannot
receive or entitled to receive the stimulus check which is not being a
american citizen, the program automatically calculates it, so as a
tax pro I have to imput (no social security no) and it automatically
takes the 300, 600, or even 1200 off the return.
If you have any doubts or inconsistencies, be direct ask your tax pro
for more information.

She's not screwing you over. If you had already received a stimulus check in 2008 then you are NOT eligible to receive the recovery rebate credit unless.......
People who fall into the categories described below may be eligible for the recovery rebate credit this year:

*
Individuals who did not receive an economic stimulus payment.

*
Those who received less than the maximum economic stimulus payment in 2008 — $600 per taxpayer; $1,200 if married filing jointly — because their qualifying or gross income was either too high or too low.

*
Families who gained an additional qualifying child in 2008.

*
Individuals who could be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return in 2007, but who cannot be claimed as a dependent on another return in 2008.

*
Individuals who did not have a valid Social Security number in 2007 but who did receive one in 2008.

Your accountant should have asked you when you filed if you received a stimulus check in 2008 and for how much, this would have deleted this confusion for you.

I guess your preparer hasn't figured out how to cover up the refund amount on her screen while she does your taxes.

Some software allows the preparer to turn off that field (I would!).

Some preparers are making a big show of going to what-was-my-stimulus page at irs.gov, printing it out and entering the amount into their software *before* they enter the W-2s. This way the software can't blindly think there wasn't a check and post a bogus refund and then shrink it after you got used to the idea. And you are fully aware that they had to enter the number. (These preparers saw the confusion that was coming and are trying to not disappoint their clients.)

Your preparer apparently didn't get it and didn't ask you for the check amount while she did your tax return and skipped that step.

If you rec'd a stimulus chk in 2008 for the correct amount (based on your income, filing status & # of dependents, etc), you will not receive an add'l recovery rebate credit. It's possible your preparer didn't input the figures properly when she prepared & filed your tax return. The IRS will verify the amount of the check you rec'd in 2008 and make changes to your refund if it was input incorrectly.

If that's the case in your situation, you're probably OK. If you are in doubt about this and you're not confident in your accountant, take your return to a different tax preparer & have them crunch the numbers (many will check your return for free).

FYI - Disregard those answers to your question who tell you the stimulus checks are taxable. The stimulus rebate checks in 2008 ARE NOT TAXABLE INCOME.

Your tax person is not trying to screw you over, its a hidden fact that the government did not disclose to those receiving the stimulus checks, that they would actually be taxed on that as income and therefor owe more money the following year. The new "stimulus" bill is even worse for all normal americans (those of us who work pay bills and taxes and are barely getting by) it will cut taxes by increasing spending in certain areas. Now how does that make sense? BUT you should call or go into her office and make her show you the exact numbers of how your extra taxes are being calculated - also make sure she added a deduction for paying someone to do your taxes last year. Check your paycheck stubs and re-evaluate your exemptions if you don't want to ever have to pay at the year end.
