Goat Whacker | Are Old Age Pensions in the Uk taxable? |
|
|

suerye

A lot of very uninformed answers here!
All pensions in the UK are taxable, whether from the State or from previous employers. |

suerye is right.
The state pension is taxable income, like any other pension. You also pay tax on carers allowance.
What may confuse some people is that generally the state pension is paid without any deduction of tax under PAYE because it is so woefully low.
However if you have another pension (e.g. occupational pension) from elsewhere you have to pay higher tax on that because your annual personal allowance will be used up by the state pension.
Benefits you will not pay tax on:
Pension Credit
Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit
Budgeting Loans
Crisis Loans
Community Care Grant
Attendance Allowance
War Disablement Pension or War Widow(er)'s Pension
Winter Fuel Payments
Cold Weather Payments
Disabled Facilities Grant and help with home repairs and improvements given by local authorities
Funeral Payments
Bereavement Payments
Child Benefit
Child Tax Credit
Working Tax Credit |

State pension is taxable income, but there is no system in place to be able to deduct tax at source from it. If you have other earned income, either a works pension or wage, your code number is restricted by the amount of the state pension, and all tax paid through the other income. You do get the tax-free personal allowance, and that is higher when you are over the age of 65.
Anyone who has a state pension over the amount of the personal allowance (and yes, there are some) has to complete a self- assessment Tax Return, and pay the tax in lump sums. Before self-assessment, the Revenue used to do what was called DP assessments on state pensioners, who had to pay the tax on four equal amounts, usually with a month or so in-between payments. |

Ignore the idiots who gave the thumbs down to earlier answers. As a pensioner, with a company pension, also, I can answer for certain. You have a tax-free allowance, just the same as you do when working. When you exceed the allowance,(this includes your State Pension), you start to pay tax. If you only have the State Pension, then you will not have enough income to pay tax. If you do have other income, and it pushes you into a tax liable position, the tax amount due is set against the tax-free allowance figure. The State Pension is always paid without tax deduction. |

My Married Woman's State Pension (I think it's around £60 p.w.) isn't taxed, but because I worked and have a private Pension from my ex-employer, that pushes the two joint incomes into a tax bracket. |

state pension no but private pensions yes. |

The pension is not taxable but it does count as income and can affect your overall tax position |

State pensions aren't but I believe private pensions may be. |

Government says that they are not taxable but they still form part of your income ( the lowest part so to speak) and if you have other income the old age pension may push that into the taxable bracket.
So stricly true but actually it's typical government bulls*it

State pensions aren't.
However if you have a private pension too and your income is above a certain amount you will get taxed. |

Do you mean a state pension? If so then no, they are certainly not taxable. |
