Are lottery winnings tax free?

The winnings are tax free, and if you put them in a current account remain so.

Then you have to watch for tax by stealth, once you start investing you are of course liable, so if you win a lot, hire an accountant it will be worth it.

If you have family to look after, start now, don't leave it until the scramble after your will when inheritance tax rears it's ugly head.

Yes they are.

You will however pay tax on any interest earned from the money while it is in the bank.

Yes the winnings are tax free but any interest you get after banking your cheque is taxed as unearned income

raysor
Yes, I believe they are. All proceeds from gambling are free of tax and I presume the lottery is a form of gambling, or betting.
So is spread betting, by the way.

Byepats may well be right where the US is concerned, but not so in the UK nor the rest of Europe. Any profit generated by the money once invested or interest gained from banking it is subject to taxation.

LoopeyLoz
Yes they are tax free because they were already taxed before the prize amount was allocated. Take National Lottery for example, they might generate 30 million pounds on a Saturday through ticket sales. They allocate 12 million to their charities, 10 million pounds goes on tax and then the remaining 8 million pounds is the prize money and so the winner receives this and does not pay tax as it has already been deducted.
Hope that makes sense and the numbers I have used are just randomly selected, they are not based on actual percentages of how it is allocated.
