Silver | Are there any states in the United States that do not charge any sales taxes or property taxes? |

Correct, Iowa...
I live on the southern border of Washington (super low property tax) and do most of my shopping in Oregon (no sales tax). Plus my hubby works in Washington so we don't pay state income tax, either. And since we have three kids, we got more back in our tax refund than what we actually paid. (We did our taxes in February!) And if you're over 60something in Washington you pay absolutely no property tax.
P.S. I've heard Washington does have good schools.
P.P.S. Jennifer - my hubby and I used to live in Oregon while he worked in Washington, we had to pay state income tax anyway, for some crazy reason. And Oregon property tax is kind of high. (Though we lived in an apartment at the time, anyway.) The best arrangement is what I described above, that we are doing now. |

If you find a place that does not charge property tax, you will find a place with crappy schools. A majority of the money used to fund public schools comes from the collection of property taxes. I can not say for certain, but I think in most places property taxes are used exclusively for public education. |

I only know about the west coast. Oregon has no sales tax. Washington has no income tax. So it would be great to live in Oregon and work in Washington. :) I don't know about property taxes. |

I think Washington and Oregon each have either low sales tax or low property tax, so you can live in one and go buy stuff in the other. |

Not that I know of. Florida doesn't charge any state income tax, which is great. They are also tossing around the idea of no property taxes on your permanent residence in Florida. This wouldn't help "snow birds". |

There are currently six states that do not assess sales tax (usually due to oil, gambling or tourism). They are: Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. However in some of these states, while there is no state sales tax, local sales tax on a county or municipal level may be applied. In other words some of the cities in these states may have a sales tax while others may choose not to but the State itself doesn't tax you.
I'm not aware of any state that doesn't assess property taxes though of the six above I would think Montana or Oregon would have the lowest with Hawaii and New Hampshire having the highest. |
