From a UK perspective, definitely.
Take an average individual..... you'll pay 20% basic (after personal allowance) income tax (on earnings and bank interest etc!), 11% national insurance, corporation tax plus income tax plus NIC on any shares you receive dividends on, 17.5% VAT on at least half your purchases (plus about 70% VAT on cigarettes, alcohol, petrol etc!), council tax (average £1k a year), road tax, stamp duty if you buy a house or shares, capital gains tax on anything you own which appreciates in value, and then to top it all of potentially inheritance tax when you die. It's unbelievable really and a wonder we have anything left!
On course the government needs it to fund all it's handouts in the form of tax credits and other benefits and to fund pointless wars on terror. Great. |

What gets me is that Mr Brown exhorts us to be prudent with our disposable wealth (such as it is) and only spend what you can afford. Working on that premise, if you can't afford it don't buy it. Then off he goes to the IMF and borrows money to spend on things that we can't afford.The irony is that we then have to pay interest on the money that he has borrowed to buy things that we can't afford.

Some folks think so. Guess that depends upon where you live. Most Americans think that they pay too much tax but they don't know how well off they really are. The US has some of the lowest total taxes of all major industrialized nations. So I guess it's really just human nature to gripe about taxes. |
