Virtually every country assesses taxes to some extent. If you think it's bad in the US, try moving to Europe. They typically pay nearly double what we pay in the US. Gasoline taxes typically exceed $5.00 per gallon and sales taxes run between 17% and 23%. Some European income tax rates are as high as 70%.
Your sisters mates from England are winding you up. I lived in England for 7 years and never paid so much taxes in my life! The tax on gasoline (petrol they call it over there) is about $5.00 per gallon.
Taxes are withheld from wages just as they are here, although settling up at the end of the year is optional for them.
The sales tax in England -- VAT they call it -- was 17.5% when I lived there and I think it's gone up since then. It's built in to the shelf price so it's not obvious at the checkout counter but it's charged on virtually everything.
They pay a "car tax" every year of several hundred dollars just for the privilege of parking on the street. In central London, a £5.00 ($9.45) PER DAY "congestion fee" is assessed just for driving your car into the city unless you already live there.
The tax on a pack of cigarettes is nearly $7.00. Good reason to quit if you ask me.

I doubt if there are many countries that don't pay taxes, and most of those are probably oil-rich. Europeans pay way higher rates of taxes than we do.
NOTE: The british pay a VAT (Value Added Tax) on just about everything they buy if not everything. |

The US is not the only country paying taxes. A lot of countries have social programs that are funded by taxpayer funds. The US economy is currently the largest in the world. With all of the business that transpires in the Us the Us government wants a piece of it so they tax it. |

What a moron... why do you think the revolutionary war happened in the first place? Hello... Britain was forcing their crazy high taxes on us when we didn't even live there! "No taxation without representation"... ring a bell, or did you sleep that day in history class? The reason a lot of European countries have such great healthcare, roads, and schools is because their citizens pay almost everything they make in taxes instead of complaining about it all the time. Wake up!
Oh, and by the way, the reason our deficit is so huge is because we defend "rich" European countries and forgive their debts only for them to act like they're better than us. |
