Are you comfortable with having the IRS deposit money directly into your account?
I like the idea of being able to get my return back in less than 15 days. However, there idea of the government having access to my account information frightens the daylights out of me. Does your account number just stay on file with them and, if so, what is the potential for fraud? What's to stop them from transferring money out of your account or, of that's too daunting a task, from writing checks in your name? after all, with your account number and routing number, what's to stop them from printing checks and writing them in your name?

Someone already touched on this--but would that make it easier for them to garnish your wages? Although I have no child support obligations, suppose I were in arrears on child support? With my account information, couldn't they just reach into my account and snatch out my money? Or, could they do this anyway.

I have had my refund direct deposited every year since I can remember. The IRS does not need to know what your account number is to garnish you. They mail a letter telling your bank that whatever bank accounts you have to take out money you owe. See the key word if you owe. Since you are getting a refund they will not be taking anything. They have better things to do then to take money that is not theirs. Don't you think people would be outrage if money just started disappearing. Every time you write a check to someone, you are giving them your name, address, bank name and account #. The IRS wants you to get your money out of their hands. Direct deposit is faster and safer. Ever heard of mail theft? Oh, don't listen to the dead beats who owe money to the IRS. Every dollar they owe the IRS means the rest of us honest hard working taxpayers have to pay more because they won't pay their fair share.

It is no more scary than the people you write checks to every day, for bills, groceries, etc. They have the same info you gave the IRS and direct deposit makes the refund SO much faster.

The IRS doesn't need to have your bank account to take your money. The gov't can garnish your wages anytime they want. They have more stuff to worry about than taking your money. Think of the scandal that it would cause.

Rising Star
Wow, I never thought about that before now. That is a bit disconcerting.

I usually keep under $100 in my account at a time. At least the one I use for direct deposit of things. No worries here. (Not unless they get my OTHER account number!!

They already have your account information. It doesn't matter if they direct deposit or cut you a check -- they are still legally obligated to take the same steps upon freezing an account.

Take the direct deposit and get your $ back sooner.

I do have my refunds, if I have one, direct deposited.

And I hate to tell you this, but if the IRS wants your account info, they can get it. If you owe them taxes for example, even if you haven't given them the info, they have access to it.

I've always done the direct deposit whenever getting a refund...even if you didn't give them your account information, the gov't can take your money easily! They already do! ;)

A bit paranoid aren't you..
1. What makes you think the Government would not be able to find out your bank account information without you providing it first?
2. If the Government (capitalized because they are Big Brother :) ) wants your money, they could always use the good ole Patriot Act and/or FISA.
3. Let us not forget that even if they mail you a check, you're likely to cash it at your bank using your own bank account. Oh my, the rats at the IRS have people that do nothing but look up the information on cashed refund checks!
4. Stop being a paranoid freak.

Hmmm, I have been getting my refund deposited this way for years now and have never had a problem. I never thought as deeply as you have, I just wanted my refund ASAP! I use an online tax preparation program and before that I just wrote my direct deposit info on my return.
Now you have me very curious to see if banks have some type of way to safeguard against this. I have some friends I will have to ask. I guess you could worry about anyplace you pay by check doing that kind of stuff, since most people know how to figure out an account number and a routing number from the bottom of a check.

Joebagodonuts
It's completely safe. I've had it done since it was available. Why would the government want to write checks with your money. They just print more.

Sunny ♥
It's not like they couldnt find out your account number anyways, if they wanted your account number right now they could get it its the IRS....

partytime
i have done electronic filing for the past 4 years and never had any problems with account fraud. its just like paying your bills on line

kckid2
If I owed IRS a bunch of money from prior years, I wouldn't want to extend them an invitation. But, for most folks, it is very safe. IRS is not going to mess with people. They already have a huge PR problem and if they were ever to take funds that didn't belong to them , it would quickly make national headlines and there would be Congressional hearings.
That's my opinion. But if it causes you to lose sleep, then I would take a pass on iy for that reason alone.
