Aren't Tax Credits delightful?
I returned to work this time last year and for the first time ever was entilted to help with childcare and tax credits. The sum I received a month was just enough to cover my childcare and topped up my salary. Now they are getting cut by over half - not enough to cover anything all becuase last years were based on the year before (when I earnt £1400 working a saturday) despite them being updated everytime my income changed.

Now I might have to turn down a promotion because I can't afford to earn any more and pay for the extra childcare I would need.

I would be better not working.

What a fanastic system.

I just can't get my head round the fact despite telling them several times this time last year what my earnings and childcare costs they still base it on the year previous.

As far as they are concerned our household income is just over £20k - for one full and one part time worker. How much less can we earn to be better of?

It is a silly system that is not working and makes it difficult for people who work

yes that is true, you would be better not working, last year myself and my partner had to suffer because of our previous years earns(in which we were not together and half the year i worked and the other half a claimed benifet. which led to us having tax/child credit a week of £54. in which 45pd of that paid our rent not including our council tax, and this tax year because i myself had no income last year just my partners wages they pay us £105.. wheres the sense and how can they work like tht its crazy and totally non lodgical.. they drive me crazy.....
i worked it out that if i went back to work then this year i would be better off by about 70-80pd a week but then next year i'd be worse off by about 50-60pd.. so it makes sense to stay at home..

you gotta love the inland rev and there rules ant ya!!!!

The only way to get anything out of them is to lie about your final yearly net.
They get you back into work and then F*k you right up.

WAY HAY to our government. Send all our tax to support a war we don't want and then leave us penniless.

THANKS A BUNCH

Try investigating childcare vouchers instead of tax credit (I'm not sure if you can get both but it's worth finding out).

If your employer is signed up to a childcare voucher scheme it means that the money for childcare vouchers is taken out of your salary before any of it is taxed, therefore you pay less tax on the rest of what you earn. It can help you save some money.

Don't dismiss your promotion before you have investigated this. If your employer isn't signed up to a scheme yet you could ask HR if they would consider it.

Here's a link.

tax credits are the worst thing this country has ever seen!!! they muck you about get you into debt without actually having the money they say they over paid you!!!

The concept is great but, as you say, basing them on history is wrong. Most people pay tax on the PAYE system and the original concept of Tax Credit was as a negative form of PAYE - but the Treasury saw how expensive that was in terms of lost revenue. However the manpower needed to work the current system is way too high and the loss of revenue from fraud and error means that they should have stayed with the original system.

No wonder a lot of deserving cases don't even bother to claim!
