Although I am paying income tax on my pensions, would it not be loyal of me to put myself down before I start to cost the N.H.S. money? At present I work out three times a week at the gym to try and keep fit. However, I feel guilty at taking a state pension which the Government could put towards the olympic games. |

Think ahead when you will want this extra help already set up and in a position to help you when you may not be the spry young thing you obviously are right now. I am speaking to myself, as well (I am 64). It is important to (1) stay connected to others and (2) to establish channels of help and support now while the going's good so when we start to wobble we will have a safe place to land! No, you shouldnt! Who cares about the N.H.S money after all, the most important thing in your life that you should be giving top prioritize is how to keep healthy and fit! Well then, I give you an applause, (big time that is!) for working out at the gym three times a week, now that what I called as determinations. Please dont be putting yourself down because the age that you bears now, it shouldnt be matter to you. And if you had family of your own, dont be hesitate to give them extra attention as at this time, they are expecting more than usual. |

This is an interesting question and I assume a tongue was firmly in the cheek when writing it.
Taken impassionately, it raises a number of serious concepts.
First the Olympic Games are over-running so much that the odd pension would not be a lot of help. I suspect we would have to cull most pensioners to pay for them. (Maybe that's not a bad idea. At least I'll still be around to watch them but I wouldn't have all that long afterwards to reminisce.)
The NHS already has some unofficial strategies to reduce the impact of pensioners. It is often reported that expensive treatments are not offered to "elderly" people as it is more cost efficient to use the limited resources on younger persons.
But following the thought through logically, why stop at pensioners? Should we allow anyone to be a drain on the NHS, whatever their age? Of course, to implement this we need to do away with the whole concept of the NHS and everyone would have to pay for all treatments. This is certainly feasible but I prefer the current system.
The state pension is very similar. You have followed the principle throughout your working life of paying pensions to those then retired. You didn't have a lot of choice as the money was taken in the form of taxation and dished out as pensions but you have effectively paid someone else's pension. Now it is your turn to collect and someone else's to pay. Seems quite fair to me.
Another point - what do you do with your pension? You probably spend it and ultimately this creates employment. So even if we could save on paying pensions the benefits payable would undoubtedly rise.
All in all, it is still worth you remaining alive. And that is treating you purely as an economic unit. I have not mentioned the other benefits to society of your experience and wisdom which are not to be lightly valued.
