As a business owner, is the drive to and from work tax deductible?
I was trying to figure out if you can take the standard mileage deduction. I seem to see different opinions about this.

If you're just driving to and from your normal place of work, no. If you have a job, something like being in construction, where you have to drive from job site to job site, then yes.

torrie
You can not deduct the expensive of going from home to your business address nor going home after your last client or business contact.

If your office is your primary place of work, then the answer is no. If you have a home office which you can use as your primary place of work, then you can deduct the commute to your other office.

However, you would have to prove by the number of days in each office to show which office is your primary workplace.

No. It is was deductible then millions of us would be amending our taxes for the last three years.

No, even if you own the business, your drive from home to your main place of business is commuting expense and isn't deductible.

No, the drive to and from work is NEVER deductible. If the job entails multiple locations, the first trip out at the beginning of the day and the last trip back home at the end of the day are non-deductible commuting miles. Any business miles in between ARE deductible. Either actual expenses or the standard mileage rate may be used.

Drive from Home -> Office -> Home; No.

Drive from Home -> Office -> Client -> Home; only Office -> Client is deductible.

Drive from Home -> Office -> Client -> Office -> Home; only Office -> Client and Client -> Office are deductible.

No.

Thin Kaboudit
"Commute mileage" is NOT deductible, so if you drive to & from the same primary place of work each day, you cannot deduct that mileage. A good tax accountant can help you restructure you business transportation needs so that they are a legitimate business expense, however.

If you take the deduction it is going to raise a red flag to the tax auditors, is the amount you are going to save in taxes going to justify the expense of going through an audit?
