At what age does the child tax credit end?
My son was 15 at the beginning of 2007 and turned 16 in August. Can I still get the child tax credit for him since he was 15 at the start of the year or can I not get it since he turned 16 during the year?

18 if not in college or they have moved out and 24 if they are living at home and are a full time student.

theonlytufrose
when they are 18 and out of school or if they go to college when they are 21 as long as they are a full time student.

DEE - LISTEN TO ME

Most of those above me here are WRONG
You can take the child tax credit as long as you are within the income limits and your child is UNDER THE AGE OF 17 on 12/31 of the year you are claiming it. Your child must also have lived with you for over half the year and provided less than half of his or her own support..

College has nothing to do with it. I wish you people who don't know what they are talking about would stop dishing out bad advice.

Therefore, you can still take the child tax credit.

until the government considers them no longer a child at age 18.

Under 17 at the end of the year.

As long as he is still living with you and you are spending at least $1500 on him, you can claim him until he is 22.

Qualifying Child
A qualifying child for purposes of the child tax credit is a child who:

Is your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them (for example, your grandchild, niece, or nephew),

Was under age 17 at the end of 2007,

Did not provide over half of his or her own support for 2007,

Lived with you for more than half of 2007 (see Exceptions to time lived with you below), and

Was a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or a U.S. resident alien. If the child was adopted, see Adopted child below.
