we owed a bit on the council tax from a previous year the baliffs turned up and we agreed a sum each month this has now been paid off in full back in may The other day we recieved a letter saying we still owed £300 were we dont owe any now and we have all the reciepts proving that we have paid up to date i rang the bailiffs up and they were still arguing with me that we owed the money i have checked our reciepts over and over again and we dont own them a penny but there still on our case and could not explain to us why we owed the money they have now said the bailiffs will come around again if we dont pay this money i have all reciepts paying in slips etc as prove but they just wont leave us alone im worried there knock on my door and embarress me infront of my neighbours i dont know were to go from here any answers pleases thanks .

first thing i would do is copy all of the receipts (you can never be too careful, next go down to your council and show them all the receipts and the original bill. As the bailiffs are employed by them they should have to sort it out. Also get in touch with CAB they will get onto them too and they often carry more weight than us mere mortals! If they do not sort it out take it either to your local paper or your local councillor. Very best of luck to you I hope you get it sorted out. x |

Look at what you owed to begin with. Add up what you have paid. You may not owe anymore of the oustanding tax, but you could be facing costs from the bailiffs. |

maybe go in person to your local council with all the paperwork, if that does'nt work the citizen's advice will help, of some solicitors give a £5 advice session maybe that would be worth a try - good luck to you, i know these things can be very worrying and frustrating. |

You need to speak to the local council or the bailiffs head office - no offence to CAB but the amount of dodgy advice they give regarding Council Tax is astonishing.
The baillif is supplied with the figures of what's owing by the Council and will accept instruction from them. If the bailiff is getting awkward then most councils will step in and instruct the bailiff once they know what the problem is.
Have you also tried ringing the bailiff's office rather than dealing with whoever comes to the door ?, the people at the office are more likely to access to the system to check whats shown as paid. |

I agree use citizens advice, Had i similar thing happen my self most frustrating,Our local town hall are completely useless could not run a raffle!
Most people i know use solicitors to pay their council tax how crazy is that!?

Bailiffs are acting on behalf of the court, contact the court to discuss this. If you have all the receipts you may want to have the court inspect the bailiff's costs.
If they are behaving in anyway unprofessionally you need to find out their regulatory body and complain. |
