Being paid once per month versus twice?
I've started with a new company and they pay only once per month. I just got paid for my first full month. Is it my imagination or is the total of taxes taken out more if a person gets paid only once per month?

Just say no!

I believe it IS in fact more because it's a larger amount than if you are paid more frequently.

No, taxes are the same total for the year, it just looks bigger when you see 1/12 of it all at once when you are paid monthly, instead of 1/24 of the total if paid twice a month or 1/26 if paid every 2 weeks.

Of course there is more, your taxed on Gross income.

It just looks like it. Have to budget better though. I like twice a month better.

It is your imagination. It all works out the same.

robert C
look at it this way , once a month = 12 paydays per year
twice a month = 24paydays per year
every 2 weeks =26 paydays per year

now go from there and work out your taxes

You are always taxed on gross income. Of course is will be more...then if you over pay you will ger a refund based on your annual returns.

Here are a few possibilities: first, calculate the actual tax rate you were paying on each paycheck (taxes divided by pay). You might find that the numbers are closer than they looked.

Your new employer may be withholding at a higher rate (I know Japanese companies often pay monthly, and they are generally more financially conservative than American companies). Alternatively, it could be a software problem -- once, my employer needed to pay two pay periods' worth of my salary in one check, but the accounting software he used calculated that I was in a higher tax bracket, and thus had to withhold more.
