Benefit fraud?
I have just reported someone for committing benefit fraud

She is only paying £20.00 per month towards council tax when really she should be paying at least £70.00 a month.

They said they will follow her, I told them what she looks like, where she lives, where she works etc

She is on 15k a year and a single mother... who get money from her partner that lives abroad

What could happen, prison?

alan v
Hi I work for benefits, the likely hood is that she will not go to prison, the normal procedure when someone is found guilty of fraud they will be invited in to an IUC (Interview Under Caution) here they will be given the opportunity to pay the money back, although they will incur an admin penalty which will be a percentage of the money they have claimed fraudulently on top of what they have to pay back. If they refuse the penalty then they will be prosecuted by magistrates court, or if they have fraudulently claimed more than £35,000 it will go to crown court and they could face a fine, a criminal record and either community service or a prison sentence

hms jollies
good for you why should she get not paying when we all have to it is the likes of her that stop the real needy from getting what the deserve

"Nice Beaver"
Prison is very unlikely - but the best thing that will happen is she will be made to pay her taxes like the rest of us have to. It's not the government she's ripping-off, its you and me.

she could go to prison if the judge makes an 'example' of her. but not very likely as its not that extreem a case of fraud. she will definately get in trouble though. tax offences are a very serious matter.its a shame nothing happens when u report nuiscence neighbours.........

ignore the people insinuating u did the wrong thing. u r well in your rights. why should we work and pay taxes everyday for people to skank the system we pay so much into??!

Yeah prison or if her daughter's really young and there's no-one to look after her than she'll get a fine. Bloody benefit cheats.

willowGSD
Well done for reporting her! Ignore those who say you're wrong!
If they realised that those benefits are being paid for by themselves through their taxes they might be less critical of you!
I for one am sick of being ROBBED by the benefit cheats! I don't object to those who really can't work but she obviously can. She wont get prison but at least she'll be made to repay what she has stolen!

Storm Chaser wannabe!!
I very much doubt she will get prison, but then why should the taxpayers shell out even more money to keep her? I (unfortunatley) have to live on benefits for now, but I would never dream of benefit fraud as it is tantamount to theft. It is people like her who give the 'honest' benefit claimants the added stigma attached to their situation. With any luck she will get fined and be forced to repay what she stole from decent, hardworking taxpayers. It will be of some comfort to them to know that should she not pay it voluntarily, it will be taken from her wages.

Don't listen to those who call you a grass, benefit fraud IS a crime. Any one would report a burglary so why not this. Continue to stick up for what is right and decent!!!

yes i believe that could be a possibility, she will certainly get a criminal record

In the present situation with the prison system full, its very unlikely that she would receive a prison sentence. They are even saying that can;'t send paedophiles to prison at the moment.

Its far more likely that she will be made to pay back the money, and may also get community service as well

Technically she could be sent to prison, but it is unlikely. More likely is that she could be cautioned and required to pay back any illegally acquired money.
Whatever, good for you and perhaps you could also try to spot those without Car Tax.
Lack of Car Tax can invalidate the insurance but it is more likely that those without Car Tax do not have insurance either.
If you spot a vehicle on a public road which is NOT DISPLAYING a valid tax disc, all you have to do is note the time, place, and details of the vehicle, and report these facts to DVLA. They have the power to crush the vehicle without delay.
Fewer cars on the road - environmentally sound, or what.

They will check out her circumstances....interview her under caution and if they believe she has knowlingly non disclosed relevant information to her claim then she will be prosecuted and dependent on how much she has had off them frauduently she will get a custodial sentence and have to pay it all back

linda m
you have no name. and you questions and answers are private. why

tringyokel
Well done for reporting her.

I am all in favour of a benefit system providing a safety net for people who need it but those who abuse the system are stealing from us.

englishbrit
M.Ps are on more then 15k a year just for their dinner money, are they not thieves. Guess who pays.

Bardic
How do you know how much she pays in council tax? Have you been rooting through her bins?

Anyway, they'll look into it. If there is a fraud going on it will depend how much is involved, they may claw underpayments back from her, they may give her an "administrative caution", they may decide to take her to court. What happens in court depends on whether she pleads guilty, how much (again) is involved and lots of other circumstances. It may be a fine, it may be a fine plus community service, whatever. Prison is a very last resort.

And she may be entirely innocent . . .

However, if she is fiddling, good for you, benefits fraudsters cost each and every one of us a small fortune in taxes etc.

Whatever happens, it is deserved, these leeches are living off the backs of straight, law abiding people. Good on you! I've done the same !

While it is extremely frustrating seeing people claiming more than thery should or just illegally claiming benefits I think it is not very nice to report someone.
