Benefits advice?
Hi I really need some help, has anyone been in this situation? I lost my job in March and applied for Income Support on 2nd April. While I was at the Jobcentre the lady contacted the Tax credits office and told them I was no longer entitled to Working Tax credits, we also filled out a form to the same effect. However the tax credits never stopped and almost six weeks on I contacted Income Support to ask how my claim was progressing, I was not worried about the Tax credits situation as I knew they would claw it back once they had acted on the info provided to them. I was then told that they would not process my claim for Income Support until they had stopped. So I contacted them again and the tax credits have stopped and that will be backdated to my last day of work. Today I contacted Income Support again to let them know and they are now saying that although the Tax credits are being taken off me I am not entitled to Income Support from the 2nd March. I am inconsolable, my landlord is

Did you claim for housing and council tax benefit seperatly from income support? if not then you should, cause you can get it without getting income support!
hope it works out for you, been in a tight situation myself and know what its like, you would be better going to citizens advice they are good at sorting things out. hang in there x

Your entitled to income support from the date you apply, usually takes a bit of time and you'll get it back dated. They take your last wage into consideration, how much and when it's due, etc. Go to the citizens advice,or try ringing income support people again, you may find you get to speak to someone more helpful and sympathetic.

hi, i have seen lots of people in similar situations who are at the mercy of the benefits system which takes forever to process.
even if you don't claim, or are refused income support you should still be entitled to full housing and council tax benefit due to the low level of income that you have.
i would strongly suggest that you seek further advice from either your local welfare rights or citizens advice bureau http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/ often one call from an adviser at these places will magically get your claim processed which you had been chasing up for months and months!
also if you continue to have problems with your landlord then seek help from shelter on 0808 800 4444 http://england.shelter.org.uk/advice/index.cfm

from what i understand about housing benefit it is work out on income, which at the time u are claiming for you would only have been receiving your child benefit & tax credit payments ie. no income from working. your housing benefit should be worked out on that income..

my local housing office told me that if my income changed in the slightest i should change my details with them eg if I was off work sick my income for that week would be less than normal so i may be entitled to more help.

My advice go and speak to someone at the office that is dealing with your claim. take all the evidence you need with you. its hard for them to fob you off when your face to face

Hi,

In my experience the job centre is a total mess and nothing happens quickly! I was seriously ill a few years ago and was unable to work for nearly a year. After 5 months I asked to join a work placement scheme to get a job even just for a few hours a week, doing something that I could do like on the phone, but they wouldn't let me cos my dr wouldn't sign to say I was well enough; but after 6 months on incapacity benefit you are seen by a job centre dr and despite saying to me not to worry n it was obvious I couldn't work, they said I was fit to work n stopped my benefits, but they wouldn't let me claim job seekers either cos wasn't well enough to look for work! I was like you - couldn't pay my rent or anything and was being threatened to be kicked out so ended up getting into heaps of debt. A year later when I had a job they sent me back dated job seekers, which I'd never applied for cos they wouldn't let me - I gave it back to them - two and a half years later I'm still waiting for my incapacity benefit appeal to get the money back despite chasing them for it, I've long since given up! Anyway, just thought you might like to know you're not the only one! If I were you I'd see if you can apply for a crisis loan - they can give you the money the same day and it's gonna be obvious to them that you're gonna be able to pay it back once you've started your new job. Good luck xxx

Hi honey
i'm sorry to hear about your situation. jobcentre's are supposed to be there to help but in most cases don't. they have always given us wrong advice.
i haven't been in your situation directly but income support work at snails pace anyway.
my advice is to ring the council directly and tell them your situation and they should tell you if you are entitled to claim housing benefit or not. or go and see them instead. people with low income can claim housing benefit so can't see why you shouldn't be able to.
your landlord is a git if he throws you out knowing you have a job to go to soon. maybe speak to your local citizens advice centre too. they might be able to give you further advice.
good luck love i hope things work out for you. email me and let me know what happens.

DONT go on jobseekers not with two young children...
You are only entitled to IS (or JSA) from the date of claim..
hence 2nd April...
housing Benefit and the BIG ONE council tax( big cos you can end up in jail), will be back dated, from the date of claim,
2nd April, but for the missing month, I'm afraid you will have to find this rent for your landlord. If he,s on your case for a months rent I suggest you get a couple of your larger male friends to " deter him from upseting you and the kids"
He knows it will be backpayed shortly, so it is only a months rent.
DSS & private landlords?? what Animals!!

clara
you can apply for a crisis loan from your social security office to tide you over

you should also ask income support to contact housing benefit as your application date to income support should be the date that is important, not the date they pay you from. i would also get in touch with tax credits and tell them that the date you received income support from has changed, they might give you a few weeks grace.
