The British just don't want to pay taxes , but they want public services

In my opinion based on 26 years dealing with taxpayers, the average person in the UK does not take charge of their tax affairs or make the effort to sort out problems. There are many tax questions posted on here which would be easily solved by people just ringing the tax office, or going in to the local enquiry centre. I have seen so many people getting into a right old pickle by just ignoring their situation - and I don't just mean people who owe tax, but people who are overpaying tax as well.
For those who complain at the rates of tax in the UK, I would poiunt them to the 70's when the top rate of tax was 98% and people in quite junior jobs were paying higher rate tax as the threshold was so low.
