Bush's rebate checks...only $300?
My boyfriend got his direct deposit this morning and it was only for $300 (not $600)- why is this? Is it based on income? Did his parents claim him? He was living on his own last year, but can you claim yourself but not as head of household?

To find out for sure how much you paid, (your tax liability), add the amount shown on line 57 on your 1040 for 2007 , plus the amount on Line 52. For 1040A filers, it is the amount on Line 35 plus the amount on Line 32. For Form 1040EZ filers, it is the amount on Line 10.

If that total is between $0 and $300, and you qualify, you receive $300 rebate for yourself and $300 for your spouse if filing jointly. If it's between $300 and $600, you receive the amount shown. Only if it's $600 or more do you receive $600 in the rebate.

If his parents claimed him he would not have received anything.

The rebate is based upon your tax liability as shown on your 2007 tax return. A single taxpayer earning at least $3,000 but less than about $11,750 would only receive $300. To receive the maximum $600 they would have to have earned at lest $14,750 in 2007.

Unless he maintains a home for his dependent child or other closely related person he cannot file as Head of Household.

momsey
It's based on income, and the rebate starts getting phased out over a certain amount.

You can't claim head of household unless you have dependents.

Who told him $600 in the first place? Unless he got a notice, I don't know how he could assume it was $600. The IRS breaks down an approximation, but still that amount isn't guaranteed.

Judy1
$300 is the basic rebate. It can be UP TO $600, if the person paid that much federal income tax for the year. It isn't based on income except for the limits on each end, but it IS based on the amount of tax you paid.

No, his parents didn't claim him - he wouldn't have gotten ANYTHING from the stimulus program if they had. And yes, many people claim themselves but don't qualify to file as head of household.

porquemoi
The amount you get depends on your income and the amount you paid in taxes.
Why do you blame Bush? Nancy Pelosi's Congress passed the law, and if Bush had not signed it then you would get nothing. Be glad Bush signed the law and if you don't think the $300 is enough then blame it on Nancy Pelosi and tell her you want more. Read the Constitution and you will see that the President can only sign bills passed by Congress and has no power to make laws by himself.

good for him i haven't received a thing. you should contact the irs operator not sure if any local irs stores are open they probably wont even talk about it over the phone

La Vie Boheme
It's based on his 2007 tax return and his tax liability. $600 is the MAXIMUM and $300 is the MINIMUM for those who qualify.
