If you received $3000 in "qualifying income" - which includes non-taxable Social Security - you are eligible for the rebate. But you must file a 2007 federal income tax return.

The IRS has announced an electronic free file option for people who have no legal requirement to file a tax return but must file a return this year in order to receive a 2008 economic stimulus payment. Click on this link to file for your rebate electronically:

Not if you dont file taxes.

You may qualify for a minimum payment of $300 ($600 if filing a joint return) if your tax return reflects $3,000 or more in qualifying income - which includes Social Security.

BUT YOU MUST FILE TO RECEIVE THE REBATE, even if you are not required to do so.

See the sample Form 1040A at the link below.

no. but basically the govt is borrowing billions of dollars from china to give out to the american people so we can all go out and buy stuff made in china

i work for the IRS and answer this question every day. Yes, non tax payers can get the rebate IF they file a 2007 tax return and have 3000 in qualified income. social security is a qualified income SSI however is not. To file your tax return with only social security icome, you only fill out line 14A on form 1040A and write across the top, information return, sign the return and send it in.

The amounts are $300-$600 per eligible person. And congress passes the law to allow this and Bush signed it.

If you got at least $3000 last year in social security, you can get $300 from this, but you'll have to file a tax return for 2007. You won't owe any tax, but filing is required to make you eligible for the $300.

You can file a form 1040A. Download a copy of form 1040A at irs.gov or pick up a copy at your local post office or public library. Fill in the top section with your name, address and social security number. In the next section, "Filing Status", check single or married filing jointly. Put your total ss received for the year on line 14a, and put zero on line 14b - you can get that number from the form SSA-1099 you got at the beginning of the year, or from your local ss office. Sign and date the form on the back in the "Sign here" section. Mail it in - the address is in the 1040A instruction book at the back - download it or check at the post office or your library. That's all you have to do if ss is your only income. If you also have other income, like maybe a pension and/or some interest, those should also be shown on the 1040A.

you have to file a tax return in order to receive the stimulus check.

I was wondering too, cause I don't trust those other 9000 answers to the same question.

How could you?

I don't think it matters whether you CURRENTLY pay taxes... you must have been an active tax payer at some point, or you wouldn't have any SSI to receive. The rebate is meant to stimulate the economy so we all spend that money on "stuff"... even though most of us will likely spend it on GAS!!!!!!!!!

David J
Nope. Why should non-taxpayers get it???
If you contribute nothing, you should receive nothing.
