You'll pay Customs Duty and VAT on the cost plus the shipping. So if the cost is $49, this is about £25. The shipping will depend on the size but could be up to £20 so the Value for duty would be £45.
The duty rate depends on what its made of, but is probably 3.7%, according to the Customs tariff. Duty on £45 is £1.66.
VAT is payable on the value plus duty which is £46.66 x 17.5% = £8.16
Total duty and VAT = £9.82. Royal Mail will declare to Customs and pay the charges, then you pay them and collect the package. Customs may waive the charges as they are below what's worth them processing |

Seller is being honest that's a good sign.
It's a bit of a gamble this one. Ex-Customs chappy was right except that the post office can charge up to £10.00 for admin, however the good news is that they usually ignore small items like this because they cost more in admin than the revenue raised |

just the shipping alone may be $20-30 depending on the weight - I shipped a 5lb or so package to UK a few months ago and it cost close to $30 to ship - I wound up not charging enough because I only estimated the weight beforehand - we don't pay the import duties to ship out of the US - so I have no idea what your costs would be - you have to contact some agency at your end |
