Head of Household filing status is for taxpayers who support a dependant (usually a child) and cannot be used by someone who lives alone. See Publication 501 for details about filing statuses. As for last year, are you sure that you filed as head of household? If you didn't have a qualifying dependent listed on your return, it is unlikely. |

Did you have a dependent last year, closely related by blood, and don't have them as a dependent this year? Except for a parent, that dependent must live with you over half the year.
The only way you can file as head of household without a dependent is if you have a child who lives with you and would be your dependent except that they are being claimed by the non-custodial parent instead.
If you filed last year as head of household and didn't have a dependent, you are on borrowed time and at some point the IRS will probably be asking for some money back, unless you file an amended return before they find the problem. |

Head of Household means there is a minor child or dependant in the household for whom you pay more than 50% of their care. It does not apply to anyone who lives alone. |

To qualify for head of household you must have at least one dependent. Otherwise you have to file single, even if you are supporting yourself. Sorry |
