Can I avoid paying tax if I receive regular payments by cheque?
I know you can avoid tax if you recieve cash in hand- but what about cheques?

You can certainly try but you can virtually guarantee that HMRC will catch up with you.

That depends on why you get the payments. If they are wages for employment, your employer needs to deduct tax under PAYE. If you receive payments as the income of a business, you need to keep proper accounts and declare your profit. If they are gifts, they are not taxable if they are instalments of a capital sum.

Remember that tax avoidance is a criminal offence and you can be sent to prison for it - as well as having to pay the tax.

Cash payments aren't tax exempt. They form part of the black economy, and you get heavy financial penalties if caught. Receiving cheques for earnings makes getting caught even more likely, as there is a paper trail.

goatsucker
no because a cheque goes in the bank and the Inland revenue always find out. A very wealthy business man i know told them he only had one bank account, they discovered all the other ones on the very same day.

you can`t avoid paying tax, getting paid by cheque is the most likely way for the tax man to find out about it, they can check your bank accounts if necessary and they will want to know where the cheques have come from.

As far as I know, you have to declare your earnings every year. I don't know how the system works but I know that people have to fill in tax return forms each year. I would imagine that this is to declare your earnings to date for that corresponding tax year.

You are responsible for declaring earnings to HM Revenue & Customs. Not doing so is fraud and a typical sentence for this is 7 years in prison...
Some people think they will get away with it, but the anonymous helpline for grassing people up is one of the busiest systems in the UK... All it takes is a jealous neighbor or friend to phone.....Then you have to explain where every penny you have, or have spent has come from! They can also access all bank/savings accounts you have or are associated with...Also, whoever pays the cheques will have to account for them in their business accounts. No matter what they say, they will cover their own backs before any loyalty to yourself...Providing a list of all employees and addresses on request to the Tax Man!
So the answer is....Yes you can avoid tax, but the chances of getting cought and going to prison are VERY high. :-)

No. You have to pay taxes on regular payments received by check.

what is the nature of teh payments? is it for work? then you have to pay taxes. Doesn't the Payor have to report to the government how much they pay each person?

Jan409
Not really

unless the cheque is paid to you personally

and not to your business account, but then that is fraud!
