Can I claim a charitable donations on my taxes if I use the standard deduction method?
Or is this something I can only do via itemized deductions?

You can claim charitable donations only when you itemize your deductions.

You will have to itemize and the itemized deductions will have to be greater than the standard deduction for it to be worth it.

If you use TurboTax or any of the other tax software programs, it will ask you for any itemized deductions you may have and then tell you if you should take the standard or itemize.

Gary
Only if you itemized on a Schedule A.

Only if you itemize.

Note: Some states will allow a small deduction even if you do not itemize.

Shashi K
NO. You cannot. You would have to itemize to get any tax break on donations.

Judy1
You can only claim charitable donations as itemized deductions, not if you take the standard deduction.

Charitable donations are part of the itemization on Schedule A. You should only use this method if your total itemizations (medical, state/local taxes, mortgage interest, property taxes, etc.) will be greater than the standard.

No ... Only when you claim as a itemized deduction.

wartz
No. Charitable deductions are part of those itemized.
