helpmebfree123 | Can I claim charitable contributions if I no longer have receipts? |
I donated a TON of clothing and shoes in 2007 to Goodwill and other charities but I either never got a receipt or have lost them by now. Can I claim those donations on my income tax returns if I don't have proof? |

You can only claim things that you can 'prove' you donated. Yes, you can put it on there, but if you get audited and can't show back-up for the amounts then you are going to have problems. |

T HE NEW RULES SAY YOU MUST HAVE RECEIPTS. IF YOU ARE DOING YOUR TAXES YOURSELF, YOU CAN ALWAYS LIE ABOUT IT ( DON'T SAY I TOLD YOU TO DO THIS) . OR YOU CAN GO AND PAY SOMEONE ANDTHEY WILL EITHER LIE WITH YOU OR DENY YOUR DEDUCTION. |

You can in hopes that you won't get audited.. but I wouldn't without receipts. If you get audited then the deductions will be disallowed. You can also only deduct donations if you are itemizing.. you cannot take a deduction for your donations if you are using the standard deduction. Best Wishes. |

iDunno

you could
but if you get audited you could see a problem |

You can claim whatever you want on your income tax - IF YOU GET AUDITED, be prepared for a nasty ride, though. No receipts, don't claim it. |

By rules that came out a few years ago, you can only claim contributions when you have a receipt. |

Just donate to another place and you will more than likely get another blank receipt. I don't think there is anything ethically wrong with adding the stuff you donated earlier on that receipt. |

It's up to you if you want to claim them. You don't have to send the receipts in to the IRS. But if you're audited, you'll need the receipts. You have to roll the dice.
If you've always claimed such, I doubt you'd have a problem if you haven't had a problem before (when you did have receipts). However, if this is a drastic change from how you've previously filed, or if you have other drastic changes, then you have a higher chance of getting audited.
Besides, what are they going to do if they audit you and you tell them you lost them? What would they do to a person that really had the receipts and really lost them? What if your dog jumped up on the table after you filed your taxes with the IRS, but ate your receipts before you could file them away?
Do you think the government worries when they take something away from you that they know they shouldn't? I doubt it.
Go for it! |
