Karen is wrong!!!! - yes you may claim Disability Living Allowance as a benefit which is NOT means tested. Furthermore, as you indicate in your question, since you have 'worked' for many years then you should also consider making a claim for Incapacity Benefit too. This is also NOT means tested, but is based on your National Insurance contribution record. If you have 52 x the lower earnings limit National Insurance (paid) contributions in the two full tax years prior to the year of claim (which is a calendar year) then you ARE entitled to Incapacity Benefit now. You will need the assistance and support of your GP as your will need a MED4 certificate to 'prove' your incapacity for work. |

Look on the Citizens Advice website (as below) to see the conditions of entitlement to disability benefits.
Should that not be sufficient information, go into your local CAB with details of your income and savings and they will calculate your entitlement, provided you have medical evidence of the disability, and of the bad effects it has on your everyday life. |

You can claim Statutory Sick Pay and put in a claim for Disability Living Allowance, and if you are awarded it you won't have to declare savings as it is not means tested, however if you wish to claim housing benefit, then you will as this benefit is means tested.
Hope this helps and have a good day. ;-) |

I agree with Mephisto but to qualify for disability benefit you must have a disability, eg: blind, if not it would be incapacity benefit but to get this you need to hand in a sick note to DSS for 28 weeks when you will then be sent for a DSS medical, it is very hard to get accepted for incapacity benefit if you are able to walk and breath. If you have not paid enough national insurance contribution in the last 2 years it will be reduced to about £20 per week in addition to your Income Support. |
