Darko | Can I claim my Dad on my taxes? |
I made $22,500 this year. My dad is disabled but doesn't receive Social Security. This is fairly new event so I've been paying his rent every month and buying groceries etc. Can I claim him on my taxes and get some sort of tax credit even though I made over $12,500 this year? |

yes you can claim him. you pry wont get an exemption for him since he's not under 18 but it'll allow you to claim head of household |

You have to pass all the dependent tests. Check out pub 501 on the irs web site |

Taxpayers may claim a dependent for a person who meets the criteria for a qualifying relative. A dependent is a person who meets either the qualifying child or the qualifying relative definitions. To claim a relative the person can not be a dependent of another taxpayer. The dependent earns less that the personal exemption amount during the year. You provide more than half of the dependent’s total support during the year. That person should not be making enough money to support him or herself. You are related to the dependent in certain ways. If the dependent is married they can not file a joint return with his or her spouse. The dependent in which you claim must be a citizen or resident of the United States, Canada or Mexico. |

If your dad had gross income over $3500 for the year, you can't claim him. Otherwise you probably can if you can prove that you paid over half of his support for the year. Without any idea of what "a fairly new event" means, it's hard to give you more of an answer. If this all just started in August or something, them most likely not.
Since he's your dad there is no requirement that he live with you for you to claim him. |

Based on the info you provided, you should be able to claim your dad as dependent and get an extra $3500 deduction off of your taxable income on your tax return. Basically your dad's income has to be below $3500 and you provided more than half of the support for him. He does not have to live with you in order to claim him since there is no residency test for parents. |

Yes, if you provided more than half of his support and your dad did not earn more than $3500 in 2008.

If you are paying for his living expenses and he is unemployed (which I assume he is since he is disabled) he should count as a dependent, even if he doesn't live with you. |

Yes, see Pub 501 and/or Pub 17. You are in effect the head of household and he is your dependent; even if he doesn't live with you. Do the flow chart to you know for positive. |

I wonder if you'd be able to claim his as a dependant seeing as he is disabled... |

Yes, you should be able to. I don't see why you couldn't. You can always call a tax place near you and just ask. If he gets disability, you may not be able to though. Check it out. Good luck! |

You Should, but unfortunately I don't think you can.
A qualifying person must:
A person who was not physically or mentally able to care for himself, lived with you for more than half the year.
Since he hasn't lived with you, it may be a problem.
Sorry.
Here is the link to the irs for that explains everything
