Can I claim my brother as a dependent?
My brother has been living with me for the last 1 1/2 year. He has only worked maybe for 2 month at most of the last year. He does not pay any money at all to live here not even for food. Does this make him a dependent he is 23. Just wanted to know if I could claim him & if it would be worth it to do so. I have always done my own taxes & have absolutly no idea how to go about something like this.

Hi, you can and you should. The only stipulation is he can not claim himself. My boyfriend can claim me because we live together.

As far as I know you just have to provide more than 50% of his care, which you do.

Check the site:

You can and you SHOULD! This will be a nice tax break for you if you are supporting your brother! However, he cannot file a seperate return claiming himself as a dependant.

Yes, claim him for 2006 then get him out of your house or make him pay 50% of all shared expenses. I'm assuming he's an able bodied lay-about, otherwise you would have told us that he is handicapped in some way. Sorry, if he is.

If he made over $3300 in those couple months that he worked, no you can't claim him. Otherwise if you provided over half of his support and nobody else claims him, you probably can as long as his gross income wasn't over $3300.

bostonianinmo
Maybe. If he lived with you all year in 2006 and had less than $3,300 in gross income and you provided more than half of his support you can claim him as a dependent.

Yep you can because you are head of household.

I am not sure about this
Why not go to H & R block and ask them.
My understanding is that there is NO fee unless you agree to have them send them in.
Go there let them do the taxes
and tell them (when they finish) that you are not sure if you want to do it or not
They wont throw it away, they will just suspend the file and you wont be charged
you can also go to the IRS website and ask a question.
If you do it now you will have better luck getting thru to them
