Adam P | Can I claim my child as a dependent on my W4 before they are born to reduce tax withholdings? |
My wife and I are having our second child in July. I want to change my dependents now to reduce my withholdings, but want to be sure this won't catch up to me when I file at the end of the year. My thinking is that I will claim 4 on my 2009 W2 so everything should balance out. |

Yes, you can change your withholding on your W-4 before the child is born. The child credit is not prorated, you are eligible for the whole year's benefit as long as the child is born before midnight on the 31st of December of that tax year.
I think it's a great idea to lower your withholdings so you don't give the IRS an interest free loan.
Congratulations on the second child!
I hope that helps. |

You can change your W4 anytime you want, and claim any number of dependents you want.
Only on your tax return do you have to wait until your child is actually born before you can claim it. |

Real Estate Guy is wrong in his advice to you. You can claim additional exemptions as long as it doesn't cause you to owe unreasonably.
You didn't mention whether your wife works at all or not. If she does, it would not be wise to add an exemption now. If she stays at home, you should be claiming M-4. |

Wait until January to change. Child will be treated as dependent for entire year of 2009. Also see how your withholding worked out, before changing it.
Your claim of allowances is on your W-4, which can be changed at any time. Your W-2 is issued to you by your employer at year-end. You cannot fiddle with your exemptions on tax return.
Your statement about this balancing out makes no sense.
If you take more allowances than permitted and end up owing, the IRS can assess penalties and interest. So if you owe more than $1000 or don't have as much withholding as you owed in taxes last year, you have problems! |

You can "claim" whatever you want on your W-4. It only changes your withholding, not the tax you ultimately pay. |

You can have less money withheld from you paychecks now so that you get more money on each check, but you will get less back on your return. |

You can't claim a child as a dependent until it is born alive. |

NO! you can only claim when born. |
