Can I claim my husband as dependent?
My husband did not work in 2008. I am going to file married filing jointly. But does that cover him or does he qualify as a dependent? I also have two children, ages 3 & 5 months.
Additional Details
So would it be better to file Married filing jointly or head of household?

Ms. Angel..
You are filing Joint, you don't put him down as a dependent, look at the Form 1040 you put both your names on the top portion, then the children in the middle section and to the right total dependents including yourself and spouse.

Tim
File jointly. Your income is pooled and taxed at a lower rate

Doctor Deth
if you file joint, you are already claiming him - you cannot ALSO claim him as a dependent - you would have a total of 4 exemptions (times $3500 each = $14,000 ) and 10,000+ of standard deductions (more if your itemized deductions exceed the standard ded) to reduce your taxable income

The joint return covers him and gives an exemption for him. You don't claim him as a dependent. And you can't file as head of household, you are married - you'd pay more that way anyhow that a joint return with the same income.

Spouses are never dependents. This same question is asked 10x per day if you had even looked. You file jointly for the 10900 deduction. Hoh is only 8k. You dont qualify for hoh if you live with your spouse. Each person, dependent or not, has a 3500 exemption. You dont file separately unless someone has tax issues that have not been resolved.

When you file joint return, you both will get standard deduction and exemptions. So for both of you your deductions are $17,900.
You can file as married filing jointly (MFJ) or married filing separately. In most cases, it is better to file as MFJ. Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/filing-status-for-married.html

He won't be a "dependent", but in your joint return you will claim exemptions for both of you, and for your 2 children.

Nope, spouses don't seem to be eligible.
