shine4life247 | Can I claim my mother and my brother? |
My father passed away a few months ago. My mother and my brother (he is 18) are not employed. I am supporting the family (house payment, car payment, utilities, etc...) can I claim them on my taxes? |

if you are providing care, you can claim them as dependents. |

Maybe, if you can show that you provided over half of their support for the year. Sounds like this year maybe not, since your dad was there and providing for them ror around half the year. But maybe next year.
And for you to claim them, since they are immediate family, they don't have to live with you. But if either of them has over $3500 a year gross income, you can't claim that person even if you provide over half their support. |

Sure, as long as they make less than $3400 each and you're supporting them, paying more than half household costs. You're closely related.
Do you live with them? If so, they can earn even more. |

In the year your father dies your mother may still file married joint. This is beneficial to her if your father had income. |

My daughter was able to claim her boyfriend (22) on last years tax return. He lived with her and had no job.
I told her to call IRS and ask for sure before she did, and she called and was able to claim him on her taxes.
She had supported him 100% of the year.
The IRS # is 800 829 1040
I know this because I do tax returns for people. |

Not enough info. You may if they live with you and you provided over half of their support for the year. Or were they supported too much of the year by dad? Usually a married couple files one last joint return when one passes away. And in that case, they may be the ones that supported your brother too. |

Yep....your brother sounds like he is a Qualifying Child you can claim, and as long as you're providing care for parents you can claim them. |

Unlikely (although, with more information, it might be possible). However, you should look into "Head of Household" filing. |

hm mm. i would ask someone about it, that would know a lil more than anyone of us on here. im not to sure, but i don't see why you should be able too, you ARE supporting them. but then again they are not juveniles. |

yes, but it will make no difference on your refund b/c they are over 18. Only minors count. |
