Can I claim petrol allowance?
I spend about 10 pounds a day on petrol, I'm in a full time permanent job and I have to use my car for work so how much can I expect my employers to pay legally...do they have to pay anything? I live in England

Are you using the car for business or just commuting? You can only claim for business use.
They could pay you up to the legal limit for your car without any tax implications, but they don't have to.
Negotiate with your employers.

Is it in your terms andconditions of employment...
If not, then probably no chance at all...unless they think so highly of you that they might listen to a plea for assistance if it means you might leave if they cannot help you!
Or you could simply ask for a rise?
Or buy a moped ;-)

BUT seriously

If you are expected to use your vehicle as part of your job, and have paid the imnsurance for this purpose on your car, it is unusual fro a firm not to pay something towards the upkeep/running costs.
I presume they pay you a salary commensurate with this necessity?
If not you are being 'taken for a ride', so to spek! - as such an expectaion should have been discussed and any remuneration agreed when you were at interview.

Your employers do not legally have to pay you anything for using your car for work. Using your car for work does NOT include getting to & from your home to work.

If you are using your car business though start recording the trips you make and the mileage and then you can claim this as an expense against your employment income so you pay less income tax. You can only do this by completing a tax return yourself, which is easy enough to do on-line. Register at www.hmce.gov.uk and then when your employer provides you with your P60 (end of year earnings & tax notice) you simply follow the instructions online, inputting the info from the P60, together with the amount of miles you have driven and you should then receive a tax repayment.

marky mark
only if it was company car or your self employed..!

Yes and No.

As you are permanent then HMRC will see you as knowing you are going to be based at the same site for 2years+ in which case you cannot claim mileage to and from work (even if you have been there less than 2 years you still know you are going to be there over 2 years....etc).

If you are expected to do mileage in your own car without payment from the employer you can claim the income tax back on the amount it "costs" you.

In this case you would have to total up your mileage and claim the tax back on 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile there after.

Say you did 1000 miles you would claim:

1000 * £0.40 = £400
£400 * 0.25 = £100 tax back. (assuming you are taxed at 25%).

Best bet is to do a self assesment online at www.hmrc.gov.uk and they will work out how much tax you are due back.

*unless you have a written agreement with your employers to state they will contribute to you traveling expenses they do not have to give you anything towards your petrol.you knew the distance before you started the job.

Mark J
You cannot claim anything for getting to and from your home to your normal place of work.

Any other miles above this such as travelling to a different site or to visit a customer you can claim tax relief. If your employer pays you nothing for these miles then you can claim 40p per milefor the first 10000 miles per tax year. Thereafter it is 25 p per mile. If your employer pays you something towards this then you can only claim the difference.

The Inland Revenue have a form for this. Just call your local tax office and ask for the form.

taxed till i die,
No nothing,If you were self employed you could claim vat back.
