Can I claim "myself" as a dependent on my W-2 form for my job?

Richard M
You can claim a withholding allowance for yourself on a W4, the form you submit to your employer to determine how much federal income tax is withheld from your pay.

A W2 is a different form, used by employers to report wages and tax withholdings.

mhowie01
You can claim yourself as an exemption. But you'll get a bigger refund if you claim no exemptions.

No, you can't claim yourself as a dependent. But if you are not a dependent of someone else, you take an exemption for yourself on your return, which amounts to the same thing financially.

Dionne J
No you can't, but here is a site that tells you who can be claimed as dependents on your W-2. Here is a direct copy from the IRS Tax Tutorial Module 4-Glossary: dependent — a person, other than the taxpayer or spouse, who entitles the taxpayer to claim a dependency exemption. It even further lists different test you can use to see who can qualify besides children as a dependent.

Yes you can. What you claim on your W-2 determines what they take from your paycheck, not what you pay at the end of the year.

My rule of thumb is to claim 2 dependants if you want to break even (owe nothing, and get no return) at the end of the year. Claim 1 if you like to get returns, and 3 if you don't like the government to hold your money interest free, i.e. you would rather pay at the end of the year than get a return.

Sure, actually you can claim as many dependants as you wish on your W-2...but if you claim more than you actually plan to file at the end of the year, you'll be paying that money back.

You don't claim anything on Form W-2. Form W-2 is the Wage and Tax Statement that your employer sends or gives you at the end of the year.

You file a Form W-4 with your employer to tell them how much tax to withhold from your pay. You don't claim dependents there either; you claim witholding allowances. While the number of dependents you claim on your tax return will influence that, the two are not the same thing. Most Single taxpayers should claim 1 or 2 allowances if they only work one job. If they are a dependent, then they generally should claim 0 to avoid a tax debt at filing time.

You NEVER claim yourself as a dependent on a tax return. You get a personal exemption for yourself if you cannot be claimed as a dependent, but you never claim yourself AS a "dependent."

You can claim from 0-10 dependant deductions without regard to actual number of dependants you'll be claiming on your annual income tax return.
The more you claim, the less taxes are withheld from each paycheck. Its kinda like a savings account (with no interest earned) to ensure you'll have enough cash on hand come every April 15th. This way, if you've trouble managing your budget, the Federal government'll help make sure you've already paid your tax debt way before its even due.
See, they're gonna get theirs...
IMHO, claiming 0-1 exemptions in order to receive a tax refund is financially immature-better to invest the extra cash from each paycheck throughout the year AS YOU SEE FIT. That way, your hard earned money can earn dividends for you, instead of for Uncle Sam.

I'm afraid that will not be legal. You will need to provide some other person like one of your offspring.
